Nah, have you ever ran an exposed braided stainless line up and down your bare arm? If you did you'd find its quite abrasive. The coating is there to protect whatever is near the line from the abrasion of the stainless braiding.
There should be nothing rubbing against the brake line. If there is, you need to fix it.

True, but the clutch line is in quite close proximity to some water lines and the firewall lip so when I installed mine (Corksport- no cover) I slit some tubing and slid it on to keep from sawing through anything.

Thats true. Still nothing should be up against the clutch line, coolent hoses should be far enough away but what you said is understandable.

To say its common in most lines is just wrong. Quality lines and fittings such as earls properly installed will never do that.
actually I had that same problem with "quality" lines from earls on off road vehicles and "quality" lines goodrich on street vehicles.
