i own a 91, but for some reason, whenever i see '89' i feel like there is more reliability and a better year for an RX-7. First year S5, First year for the GTUs, and just that since it was a new model...well...they spent more time making them right. just my opinion though

i would want the newest one, 91, newer is usually better, everything in the car is new and theroretically less likely to break. All the plastic is less aged, rubber is less aged etc..
Also they had 2 previous years to prefect the s5 before this, i'm sure they fixed minor things every year making the car better and better.
I think just about anyone would want an s5 over an s4, more hp and the tail lights are generallly accepted as better...Its like a first gen, why would you want a 100hp 12a base when you could have a 135hp 13B GSL-SE?
Also they had 2 previous years to prefect the s5 before this, i'm sure they fixed minor things every year making the car better and better.

Mazda fixed all the little things, that were problems on the 86 (like rear hatch glass attachment, warning cluster, injector impedence, other issues), still had the lightweight german Jack and spare, still had a fast lock up LSD (except on base/SE and 'verts), body was 100-150 lbs lighter than the series 5.
Didn't have the lame mouse belts or air bags, wasn't on the cost crunch that lead to things like engine speed sensing power steering, or fluid type LSD, or tail lights stolen from a mid eighties Ford T-bird all found on the series 5 cars.

ive have a 91' and i used to have a 87'. the S5 is a much more sporty car, it looks better and performs better compared to my old car(acceleration, braking, handling). the interior is much nicer and overall ive had lfewer problems with my 91'. the only complaint is i have power steering but im gonna swap that out soon to a manual rack. also it doesnt get the best gas milage but who cares about that. complaints about the mouse belts are crap, i like them, they hold me into the seat when im in hard corners better then regular belts soooo eat it, im partial to S5's.

What I like about the S5's are that it has 20% more power, & some characteristics of the Turbo II such as differential, etc. I also like the lights, the way how the moldings on the side goes along with the car. I love the FC3S a lot more than the third gen. I guess is because I have one, I am glad for what I have & I enjoy it.

Well, The Ace lives in Greece, so he can buy a 92, us here in the US could only get the 91. I have a 91. I love it. Nothing in the interior is broken, and the body (except for the roof) is in awesome shape!! Newest one, so what can I say?

The only FCs that are truly 92 models were made past 08/01/91.
Note the model year break down on the side of the page from Mazda Japans History of the RX-7 website
Note how there was production of the 'verts way through 92 even after the line had been re-tooled for the FD and had been producing FD models.

And I think its funny so many people are voting for the 91. The 91 was the weakest performace model out there.
Almost 0 production on the sport 4 piston brakes, and LSD on NA models. The N/As Had a mish mash of parts left over from production on other years. It is rare to even find a 91 'vert without a lame automatic.
I just don't know what you guys are thinking sometimes???

My friend has a black vert with a manual tranny. They aren't all that hard to find. I believe they only came in black and red though during 91. Yeah for some reason I have always been partial to 89's as well. I love the looks of them and all that maybe why I decided to invest in a 89 GXL
