Best upgrade path! (Decisions, decisions..)

Hiya!

So as it may seem, I might be getting a perfect condition, stock Turbo II.

There was a possibility of me getting a heavily upgraded TII before this, so I'd never thought about it until now.

I recentely read a thread about how adding just intake and exhaust on your TII would raise the boost pressure too high. I got thinking - then what's best upgrade path?

If you had a limited budget, what would you be the first thing you upgrade? Please no 'Comedy 20b option'. From fuel pumps to ECU to exhaust, how would you do it?

Your suggestions determine how I spend my money to eventually make this thing a beast

(PS: This will probably be an S5, but if you want to do one for S4 too, go ahead)

Before you do any mods get a microtech. Youll be amazed at how much better the car runs, even 100% stock (except the ecu).

well, to be safe get an FCD ($40-$100) and a bigger fuel pump(around $100), then put on a full 3" exhaust with no cats and free-flow mufflers (price can vary greatly). Also port the wastegate (free) and possibly get an SAFC ($300 and up) if you are planning on pushing lots of boost. A new intercooler is another upgrade you should consider.
It is relatively easy to get serious power of of a TII, new exhaust and intake with support mods will push the HP wayyyy up.

Go with the Microtech, it will make getting big power out of your TII much easier.

Would you just mind listing some model numbers, prices and links too while you're at it?

Between the places I'm going to be shopping (RX7.com) and MarvelSpeed, hopefully I can find anything I need.

And, what makes Microtech better than Haltech?

How about going with suspension upgrades first? Maybe replace all those worn out rubber bushings, get coilovers, and some new rubber. Remeber you gotta point in the right direction to get there fast!

I would say get a walboro and FCD first, and fix everything that needs fixing that you dont plan on getting rid of soon. Also port the waste gate and get some gauges. Next I would get some kind of fuel computer either standalone or SAFC depending on how much horsepower you want in the long run. After that get a 3" exhaust and an intake and you are set for like ~250 hp atleast.

Tuneup. EVERYTHING.
EMS-whichever...the microtech presence is strong enough in this thread already so I won't mention mine....
Fuel system-Pump, injectors, rails, and lines...now tune down the fuel with the EMS.
Exhaust-turbo back...no cats...now add fuel to accomodate extra boost.
Suspension/brakes-often overlooked in the pursuit of speed...but what good is it without control?
Cooling system-new AL rad. elec fan WITH shroud. Extra power comes at the price of extra heat...
Bigger turbo-manifold...turbo...dyno time to tune the EMS with all the extra fuel (you see a pattern being made? I'm making a path)...

Around this time you should be around 3-400HP. What's next? Ported motor...bigger turbo...

If you do get the FCD then make sure you port the wastegate before installing FCD.

I would say get these mods first:

-3inch Downpipe and straight pipe it back 3inch all the way.
-Port the wastegate to be BIG
-Walbro Pump
-Boost gauge
-A/F Gauge
-FCD
-Boost control
-Cone Filter for intake with some sort of heat shielding or boxed in

Run it at around 11psi, that should show some nice power gains for sure. Just remember to make sure your not running lean or anything and keep an eye on the gauges when you floor it to see whats happening. And have fun.

i think you should slap a t04E on there, and you'll be kewl. no need to replace anything else. you'll have a damn fast car for about 4 seconds.

do a FULL tuneup replacing ALL the fluids and such. then get some good tires. replacing the suspension bushings is a good idea too. better handling always equals faster speed in the sense that you will be able to drive faster(not so much your car is faster).

ps- check them brakes too!!!

The content is a little scattered in this thread, but it's some of the best I've found for a n00b who's looking to start upgrading his TII.

What do people think nowadays? Let's say I want to open up the exhaust on my S4. What are reasonably inexpensive options for controlling fuel? Is the S-AFC still the default choice? What about the HKS AFR? Is boost control necessary? I've heard that the Walbro is power hungry and needs some wiring modification to keep from starving for voltage.

I assume most mild to medium power goals on the TII start on a similar upgrade path. What is that path?
