Best tires for FC Drifting?
Assuming suspension, DTSS eliminators, etc, have been installed.... What would be the best tire size/brand for a 16 inch wheel used for drifting?
If I'm correct, then you use the throttle to steer the car through a turn, and therefore you would need tires that break away at a certain point and no longer provide grip... I'm afraid if I go with a Competition tire, over a "sporty" tire, I may not be able to control where the car starts to slide....
My theory: If the tires grip too well, then i'll have to throw the car out further in a turn to get it to start drifting, I'd like to avoid that.
Essentially I need a tire that will be easy to find that sweet spot between grip and slide that will be perfect for learning how to drift.

Bald stock 205's overinflated. Preferrably old so they get all glazed up. You want to cheat rub some of that tire shine on the outside treadblocks

The most popular tire among drifters in Japan are hands down the Advan Neova. Seems like the 2nd choice are the Falken Azenis. I use the latter.
Id recommend againist going with bald tires for anything other then low speed situations where you're familiarizing yourself with a lack of grip situation. The Japanese call them "unko" tires I believe which translate roughly to **** tires. Dont do it

I've got a set of Azenis', they grip way too much to drift. You've got to have a lot of power to break them loose, and it would be better if you could get the car going by upsetting it's balance than by spikes of throttle. I think the reason Falken's are used alot is because they tend to sponsor the contests, and the Azenis don't squeal like some of their other tread patterns.

There's a place here in town where you can get junkyard used tires for $15 each, installed. If you're going to burn 'em off in a hurry why spend a lot of money?

whatever you do, don't buy new tires, break 'em in for only a couple a weeks, then try to drift. They catch grip really easy, swing the front around and you end up having a two foot dent in the front of your '95 240

go to your local tire shops and hunt outback by the dumpsters until you find the size you need.
most places pay about $3-$5 per tire to have someone come take them away.
lots of times they will let you browse through and take em away.
saves you and them money.

It's cheap when you go trash dumpster jumping, but when you get better, it's going to hurt you.  I play tech for two guys in Hawaii, and they are getting better every session.  One is good enough to be sponsored, and his crappy miscellaneous tires are hurting his performance, cause he cannot get consistent.  Once you get really consistent, the inconsistent tires will HURT you.

If you're just beginning, cheap tires will be OK. Stickier tires will help contol, especially in higher speed drifts. Falken Azenis and Yoko ES100's seem to be popular among the better guys. The Signal team uses S-03's.

Falken Azenis are basically street-legal R-compound tires. That's why so many AutoXers use them, because you can stay in stock classes with them.
If you're looking to not have traction, these are not the tires for you. Just get crappy All-Season tires, if all you want to do it rip them apart...
