Question The best N/A to do a TII swap with.....

Just for curiosity purposes i have been wondering what would make the greater performance car had you the ability to swap to a TII motor and all components... So, from a performance stand point which would be the best setup to take the swap... please dont say "just go get yourself a TII if thats what you want" thats not what im asking at all i allready have a gxl with a jspec tII and i can out pull most all of the stock tII's ive raced anyhow im looking for peoples opinions....

SE I believe is the best, its already got the 5 lug and better brakes/suspension minus the sunroof. So its the lightest.

best will be the base model because its the lightest. Vert will be the coolest turbo though.

The Vert, as they didn't come turbo over here, and there's something to be said about flying around corners with the top down.

I would also say the vert, just because I love drop tops. But I would also say that the GXL would be a good choice. I have an 86 GXL and I really like having the extras in it like sunroof, etc. My car is all stock, and while it isn't really fast, it gets up and moves really well. I am just now finishing up the work to get everything working right so I can get with the mods, and MAN I cant wait to see how it feels with more power!

I know that a lot of you guys will say "go with the base cuz it's lighter" and **** like that, but if you're gonna spend the money, why not get EXACTLY what you want?? Not everyone wants a sunroof, but if you're shelling out that kinda cash, why sacrifice? Besides, the extra weight savings will probably make such a small difference, and you would never really benefit from it unless you are gonna use it for racing.

IMHO, "stripped" defeats the purpose of it all. I want a car I can cruise around in and be comfortable, not a bare bones car just cuz I can save a few pounds.

I had an '88 SE. It had the tiny brakes, 4 lug, but it did have a sunroof. The SE became the new "base" model in '88 and was about 2650lbs I think.

Personally, I'd go with a GTU for an S4 for the TII swap or a GTUS for an S5.

The SE isn't very good. I chose GTU but I mean the 88 GTU like mine.

It's a TII without the power crap and the turbo. Although my car is about to be a GTII once I get the Jspec.

So I will start off a little lighter than a regular TII but I will have the sway bars and 4 pot brakes of one.

My vert. would be the best. If things go as planned in a couple of months it will be a NA turbo vert. at that.

I said GTU, but as long as it's not the 4 lug, it should be fine. I mean, doing the 5 lug swap is just one extra step you have to take other then that (imo) it's personal preference... I like power windows and a sun roof. I think it makes the car look good with the roof tipped up and back.

i saw GTUs on the list i have to say that would be the worst idea to do a turbo swap in seeing how rare it is and that a t2 would be cheaper anyway i say i would have to slap and steal the car from someone who put a turbo engine in a GTUs but then again it would be best set up for it seen it be the T2 twin and all just NA style

performance wise the best swap would be into an 88gtu or 89+ gtus. as it would be the lightest and stiffest (no sunroof)

but anything other then a vert I wouldn't bother with and just buy a turbo II.

Ya an 88 GTU would be cool. If I had a GTUs I wouldnt molest it, those things are rare as it is. Also a vert would be cool. I think Im gonna put my TII engine in my vert.

Added Sport and 'vert models to the poll

Although the 88 GTU really should be there too, as the 89-90 GTU was really just a SE with 5 lugs and not really reflective of the performance standard of the 88 GTU.

And why would anyone pic a GXL to convert to Turbo. A T2 is a GXL with a Turbo driveline anyway. Just buy a Turbo instead.

I voted for GXL and the SE. GXL because of comfort and SE from what I have read from above.

SE is the worst for the conversion. Read my post above. Trust me, I've had one.

Well Icemark, I understand that the GXL is the same car without the turbo engine, BUT....to quote the guy who started this thread:

"please dont say "just go get yourself a TII if thats what you want" thats not what im asking at all"

Besides, our cars are fast approaching the 20 year old "antique" status....just exactly how many good TII's do you think I could find out there? Besides, I would also do it for the project, and maybe upgrade at the same time(different turbo, etc).....your post is basically the same as saying:

"Why put money into your old RX7 to make it go fast?? Just put the same money into a Camaro with the V8, Mustang GT, etc....."

Some things are worth doing yourself, and I think that was the purpose of this thread. I love working on my GXL, and you just can't get the same thing by buying a different car....

I honestly like seeings old stock base looking cars that are really fast (my buddy has a 92 eagle talon DL .. 96 horsepower 1.8 litre) But he did a swap hee hee... a 4g63 with the big 16G... good lord what a sleeper that thing is... but relating to that, id vote for 1988 SE because of how light it is. the brakes are small though... but thats why you get bigger ones

Just my 2 cents

HUH???? The 5 lug didn't come on the SE (except the 89-90 canadian version which was the same as the US 89-90 GTU), and the suspension is the standard base model suspension.

Don't confuse the FC SE model with the FB SE model.

yeah, I just don't have a high opinon of the GXL. It was fat/bloated in every version and had the softer suspension that the AAS was suposed to make up for (and never really did). The only thing it really had going for it was the bigger brakes (which it needed because of the extra weight comparied to say a Sport) and the LSD (which vanished amid the buget cuts of the S5 models)

A Sunroofless S4 for speed; An S5 Vert for style.

Anything else, get a TII.
