CT Best catalytic converter?

I have ten days to pass emmissions. Problem is, Im runnin a carb and premix, hollowed out cat, headers and no smog pump. What im goin to do is buy the best cat converter i can and run a smog pump to the backpressure hose for the
5th and 6th ports (mine r always open)

What is and where can i find the best catalytic converter?

Whats the cleanest burnin premix?

What additives will help?

Should i make and exhaust leak where the o2 sensor goes?

The emmissions guy is a good friend of mine and hes only doing a tailpipe test. Hes on camera and cant do too much for me

Thanks

there is information about emissions (and how to pass them) in the FAQ.

in terms of the best brand / best working cat - I would be willing to bet that you will get a lot of different opinions, just do some searching around the net...

all the aftermarket cats are basically the same thing, unless you get one of those fancy metal substrate ones.

if you're on a dyno, and the carb is about 14.7, with the airpump air going to the right place and a cat, you should be in the ballpark

If you're willing to have an exhaust shop make one for you, get the biggest element you can find, cut the stock flanges & split ait pipe off & have them welded onto the new one. I use a free one from a Cadilliac dealership that's about 2-3x the size of the stock main cat. It passes smog with flying colors every time.

I don't know exactly; I got it second-hand. But I'm sure it was something with a V8. The stock main cat, from end to end, is about 17" long. So, whatever you get, it will need to be slightly shorter than that so the flanges have some room.

My usual exhaust guy wouldn't let me use my old converter to make my Racing beat setup pass. Apparently its against federal law to install anything but a brand new converter. $24k fine. I ended up getting a bonz 3" and ordered the flanges from RB.

But IF you can find a welder definatly just get one in decent shape and use it. Then hold on to it, off of the car of course, for your next test

im pretty much on the same boat as op.

I can make it pass emission at a 'fee'. but I don't really want to do that.

might get a bionez cat, hook the air pump back and see what happens

the bonez cat here http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/fcexhaust.html works wit my header but a bigger cat might cleanup up the exhaust more. Im going to loosen up some of the header bolts and make an exhaust leak also.

I am looking at that CAT, and I will keep it on. Can't really stand the straight pipe's exhaust smell, giving me a headace

Are you running a carb or fuel injection?

Unnecessary. The stock belt driven pumps push more than enough air. The condition/size of the catalyst in the converter will be the deciding factor.

How long will the average Magnaflow or Bosal or Walker cat from the local parts store last behind a rotary anyhow?

I had to have one stuck in my exhaust as well...

RB Header, 2.5" catalytic, XS Power Catback.

So i have a better chance with a bigger cat than the Bonez high flow. Im trying to find one on ebay but they mostly have universal cheap looking ones

Is this big enough? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MAGNA...Q5fAccessories

There shouldn't be much difference internally. As far as I know, nearly all modern cats use the same type of ceramic honeycomb w/ a precious metal substrate.

Probably, as long as whatever it is, it fits. But the bigger it is, the more of an exhaust restriction it will be, which only matters if it's going to be used for a long while.

I got the car only for a week something 2. Its on jackstand now, never even really look at it.

I believe everything is still stock except for the exhaust part.

I went thru without a cat or smog pump because my temp plate was going to expire, my parts hadn't arrived and i needed to bring results whether pass or fail to dmv to get my plates.
HC CO NOx
LIMIT - 385 - 1.23 - 2692
EMISSIONS- 952 - 7.10 - 0

I'll post my results after the retest with a cat, denatured alchohol and smog pump

i have one, it does pump way more air than the belt driven pump, but it is not designed to run for more than 30 seconds at a time.
