the best 2nd gen for the money
I think im going to join the RX-7 (or Rex as I have learned around here), and im 99% sure that I can't afford a 3rd gen. I know of the possible irreliability of rotary engines, so I did a little researching, and for some reason the 87 (GXL?) only had positive remarks, while every other model/trim had some bad marks. What is the best 2nd gen for the money--and reliability--since this will be my daily drive, and my project car. Note, I am on a budget, although I have seen N/As- through T2s that are all pretty cheap.
I have my eyes on some mods and upgrades already, also how many DIN slots are there in the 2nd gens?
Thanks guys.

Depends what you want. Killer fast car...you gotta get a Series 5 (89-91) TII. Great handling and quick...89-90 GTUs (notice that is GTU's' not just GTU). For a fun car to dink with, a 89-91 N/A. IF you got cash, 86 SE with a Series 5 TII engine in it (lightest chassis with most powerful/reliable stock engine in it.) I have a 91 N/A, decently modded, but am begeiing the process of getting a TII swap together...

For basic racer: 86-87 Sport, 89-90 GTUs. A 88 GTU would also be a second choice here. These are the most balanced feeling RX-7s and typically not loaded with all the extras. Just what you need to go fast.
For speed: any T2 (but take in mind that there are more maintence requirements and it is tough to find a good condition one that has not been all hacked up in mods or taken care of)
For luxury: 86-90 GXL or 91 Coupe with A & B packages.
And the radio opening is a little bigger than 2 DIN (2 DIN + about 3/4").

If you are thinking of adding a Turbo or swaping the 13BT into the car, don't waste your time and money. It can be done, but its a lot of work and will be more money than just buying a T2 in the first place, even if you have to wait for a good deal.
But for basic NA improvements I recommend a cool air box and apexi or K&N cone style airfilter, with a downpipe (or header depending on your ability to stand the noise) retain or replace the main cat with a high flow one and add a racing beat or corksport cat back (again depending on your noise quotent).
That will yeild another 15-25 HP depending on tune and engine condition and still pass most emissions inspections.
No matter what the first thing you should do is replace all the fluids, plugs, filters, O2 sensor and belts as soon as you get the car home. Check the timing to make sure it is on. In good tune a factory stock NA car is still faster than a 2002 Miata and many other cars.
