Belts whine SO MUCH

On my poor FC, after the ex-mechanic worked on it the belts whine like hell. (I hope he only over tightened them). From about idle to 3k you cant hear it outside of the car. Once I hit 3k+ the whining is almost louder than the exhaust note. (And im running a straight pipe). The stupid mechanic put a bolt in my fan clutch but I dont think thats the reason it whines. Any help?

Yeah you need to check belt tension. If they are too tight it will cause your water pump, and alt to fail early.

The factory owners manuals as well as the serivce manuals have how to and what to adjust on the belts.

Probably the first, with oil changes and the like.

In the owner’s manuals that come in the glove boxes of the FC, the belt adjustment is usually around 6-15.

Oh... and be careful not to overtighten the Alt. belt.. it can damage the bearings in the alternator, (now mine makes noise... ) and it will seize, putting enough drag on the engine to stall it at idle... (or make it not start at all... ...ask me how I know... and what I learned while sitting at the side of the road... )

Possibly the belts were too loose, so the mechanic tightened them to specs which caused the whinning. You can apply belt dressing (temp. solution, same as spray) to quiet it down, or just figure it's time for a belt replacement.
