Belts, Radiator, Motor...OH MY

Here is the story, I was driving to work about 6 miles from home, when I heard a pop and all of the warning lights come on. (first thought...alt belt gone, had this happen on old fc) I turned off all electrical, and turned around to take her home (slower, of course). about a mile from house notice that temps are rising, still running ok, (but still going slower, and praying nothing to drastic is broke), as I get home, start to notice that steam is coming from under the hood.

Pop hood find the radiator split across the top: OUCH....

a couple of the other belts are gone as well: DAMN...

NOW i'M WORRIED ABOUT THE MOTOR BEING WELL DONE... given the temps.

I figure that I won't know any real thing until I can check it out, replace the radiator, and replace all of the belts. Is there anything else that I can/should check?

BTW: I'm lookign for a radiator now, will a s5 rad fit on an s4?

Dude if u didnt get in the red zone with the temp and its home u may be ok. These motors are definately tougher than the hype. Good luck! BTW I think a S5 Rad fits a S4 (looking at them in the JY they seem to be the same except for the 'pipe'..

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to stop and wait hours for a tow truck, because my job is protecting idiots like you from the dredges of society, so if that causes me to have to spend a little more, I do that. WHY???

Because someone has to protect sheep such as you from the wolves of the world who would prey on you....

any other thoughts on a mechanical tip, or just more dribble ???

Thx DCRasta: I'll find out in a few days

No, but I'll keep an eye out.

Have you thought of re-doing them yourself.

I bought a set of leathers from leatherseats.com that were great, and put them on myself.

I am about an hour and a half from Waldorf and have two S4 radiators I need to get rid of. The radiators are in Round Hill, Virginia. Send me a PM if you want one.

Red face Update

Today, I pulled the rad out, and replaced all of the belts. I think I may have hit the lotto becuase the lower end of the rad still had AF in it, so I'll keep my fingers crossed, mow all i need is to be able to pic up a rad in the next day or so, to get her back together, and check for other damage.

Seriously, though, there's a decent chance that the motor is ok. From what I've seen, a lot of the times overheating kills an engine there was already some minor water seal problems anyway, so if you're motor was fine this prob wouldn't kille it. Hopefully, you didn't do any permanent damage. I can't think of anything to look for until you get it running again. Once its running, look for obvious stuff like white clouds on startup and coolant mysteriously disappearing.

Compression check before replacing all this stuff...

You don't need any cooling system at all to the turn the motor over for a minute or two. You could run for like 5 mins without a radiator...Tofuball has a compression tester. PM him about borrowing it...it could save you a lot of time/money in replacing all these parts.

So if his compression is ok, he doesn't need a radiator? Huh?
Honestly, a compression check won't tell you much of anything about a bad coolant seal. You can go ahead and do a comp check , but I doubt it will tell you much. Just get a new rad, add coolant, start her up, and see what happens.

Add the radiator, add the coolant, take out the thermostat, crank her over look for bubbles in the coolant, if no bubbles start her up and watch water neck for the champaign bubbles. *** ubbles, no problems..

I also plan to change oil/ filter in the am, to make sure I don't have coolant in the oil. THe coolant that came out this morning, did not appear to have any contaminents in it, so hopefully it will be ok.

Once it's running I'll be looking to due the Comp Check, never done it before, but hey it's all about learning right?

Well I got a radiator from Brandywine Auto parts. Intalled it, changed oil, no coolant in oil, did the coolant seal check: good to go

Started no problems, no smoke, let it warm up while keeping eye on temp gauge, hoses, and radiator, all seems good. It ran for about 5 minutes before I took it around the block, ran just as it had prior to this entire episode.

I'm still thinking about doing a compression check: just to be sure.

Guess that means that 88gxl does not get his wish for me to have a blown motor, I hope he does not feel suicidal or something because of lil ole me.

Dcrasta I did not see any seats there, but if I hear of any i'll keep you in mind.

For those that offered advice, tips, and insight thanks a bunch.
