Question belt tension

what is the best way to adjust the belt tension for the air pump and the alternator? should i use a pry-bar?it doesnt look like there are any bolt tensioners.

pull up on the alt a screwdriver or blunt object and pull up. the belt should be able to move like 1/2 to 1" side to side. so yes crowbar will work fine, just dont stress the belt too much.

Something wooden like a broomstick works well and doesn't mar the metal. An extra set of hands is nice so that one person can hold the tension while the other one tightens the bolts.

There are also various gadgets that you can buy at your local generic auto parts store. I have a manual-tightening version of the first tool listed, and it works fairly well.

See the service manual for proper belt deflection.

thanks,i used a wire wheel to clean offf my filler neck that holds the thermostat, and i think i got some of the dust on the belts, they started to squeak right after that,i cleaned them and used some belt dressing, but they still squeak at high rpm.i took out the ac system, incliding the belt driven part on the drivers side(not the air pump)that shouldnt have affected the alt and fan belts should it?

Check belt tension once again. Contrary to popular belief, that alternator belt should be tight with only a minimum of deflection. Under heavy electrical loads, it may look as though the alt is spinning at the correct rpm, but in reality the belt is "slipping" over the pulley. Have seen many cars in my years where especially in the winter, batteries have discharged because of a loose alt belt.

when i did it i used a plain flathed screw, luckly.... the alternator stayed in place when i lifted it prior installing the tension bolt.. make sure when you start it hear for squecks if you do you put too much tension on the belts.
