BEHOLD! The self healing RX-7

so yah, I started driving my 89 TII a few months ago and I knew I needed a new engine.. low compression on rear rotor. 30psi after it was sitting for a while, 60psi after a week of driving. you can hear it in the pulses, but up high it always sounded fine and had lots of power.
It also smoked a WHOLE lot anytime I revved it above 4-5k and let it go back to idle, the vacume would cause oil to seep past the control rings and everyone behind me would get lost in a cloud of oil.

well since I started driving it I put about 3000km on it, but last week I took it for a short roadtrip, only 400km in total but it was all highway driving at a stable 3500rpm and for the last week I have not seem any oil smoke at all, it drives clean and I have not checked my compression yet but the pulses now sound even and I have way more low end torque which was severly lacking before and slightly faster spool times.

my car is stock with a 3" turbo back exhaust and intake.

any thought on this? could have been a stuck seal or flattened seal spring, but I cannot explain why the oil control rings have been (temporarily) fixed.

well I should clarify, the engine is a jspec and was swapped in by the last owner who realized it had a problem right away and he never drove it so it probably sat for a year in the car, but who knows how long the engine it's self sat.

I had a self healing valve oil seal on my beater car a while back... yes I'm talking about piston engines (taboo?)... anyways... The timing belt broke while driving.

After I replaced the timing belt, the car would smoke like crazy. (I guess the pistons hit the valves and the seals got dammaged?) With much frustartion, as this was my beater car, I got a little worked up and instead of taking the thing apart to fix it, I decided to thrash it.

So off we went to a deserted industrial area and just started doing handbrake stands and reverse donuts and revving the **** out of the car... and all a sudden, the smoke stopped!

Drove the car for a year and a half after this and the smoke would come back every couple months and I would just put clutch in, smash the gas and keep it there for 10 seconds. The thing would stop smoking every time.

Car was a 1990 Dodge Colt 100E
1.5 Liter Carbed 4 Speed stick.

try the water injection next, clean it out and see if you got any exhaust leak.

lol, funny you mention that, i was just cleaning my car and decided to "water inject" my exhaust.. basically just messing around seeing how far I can get the water to shoot out, but it cleaned out PILES of carbon, I was amazed.. I know it has nothing to do with my engine but it was funny and now there is 2 black streaks on the driveway.

I will try the water trick on the engine next time I get a chance.

Possibly it doesn't have any oil to burn?

I will point out that a new compression test should be done. Also, a stuck seal could still be the culprit. You have no idea how long a JDM block sits before it even ships...then there's all that time until you buy it.
