battery help appreciated

Exclamation battery help appreciated

my alternator belt snapped on me last week and i replaced it and all was fine...i didnt drive the until seven stock and it was still good...today in the morning my battery was dead so i got a jump and took off to school..on my way to school i looked at my volt meter and it was reading 16 and when i got to school i smelled something funny coming out of my car i opened the hood and saw smoke kind of smoke/gas coming from the battery i have no idea whats going on any help is appreciated thanks

could your ALT have overcharged your battery?

You likely overcharged the battery which eventually leads to its demise. When a battery overcharges the smell that it puts off resembles a putrid egg type aroma. Besides replacing the battery, you need to replace the alternator as well. The alternator puts out that much voltage when the internal voltage regulator goes south. You need to figure out whether this was caused by the alternator itself or was the wiring to the alternator the root cause.

its smells exactly like that! im at school right now its about 10 miles from my house would i be able to drive it home?

That's your call as the high voltage currently being created might damage some of your electrical circuits. If you do decide to drive it then turn on as many accesories as possible to help pull down the voltage to acceptable levels even if it includes driving with the lights on in the middle of the day.
