What I do is I start my car, then I unplug the battery while the car is running. (some people say it could mess up the cars computer, but I haven't had a problem with in and I've done it on 10 or 12 different makes and models of vehicle). If the engine dies, then the alternator is not working. If it keeps running, I use a volt meter to check the battery cables. There should be something like 13.5 volts going to the battery to charge it.
If the battery won't hold a charge, it needs to be replaced. The flooding problem is not related to the battery, do a search for flooding to see what causes it and what to do to remedy that problem.
