battary explosion!!!
The battery box has a ducted vent because it's supposed to have a lid. This might allow explosive hydrogen gas to build up without forcing some air in.
Why bother taking it out?

I still have my battery lid !!! In fact, when I got lazy and had a loacl place change the battery for me (due to a recall); the LOWLIFE tech Threw Out the lid And the box!! Luckily; I checked the work before leaving, and retrieved my parts and corrected the install right there.
(AFTER making sure that the tech got disciplined!)

I still have mine
I also have EVERY SINGLE plastic piece under the hood...
My car looks so much stock, that even if I do power mods, my "stocker-looks" wont allow my increased HP to come to play....

Mazda's main reason for the battery box and cover was to keep the battery from getting too hot (which radically shortens battery life).
That vent tube helps cool the battery at speed and helps keep down explosive gases when charging.
