Bare minimum to run
Couple days ago, a friend asked me about getting a drag fc going, and was wondering what the cheapest way to do it would be. Obviously, cheap and fast dont mix, but it brought up the question:
What is the absolute bare minimum of electronics you need to keep the car running with a stock ecu? IE what relays could come out/emissions/etc. I searched and couldnt really find a comprehensive list.

The factory service manual has comprehensive wiring diagrams. Go to the very back of the book first to see the harness diagrams. From there, you can go to specific system diagrams if you need to refine your search.

AFM
ignition
CAS
ECT
pressure sensor
fuel injectors
TPS
pressure regulator plumbed to a vacuum source
if an S5 it would need either a chipped ECU to eliminate OMP limp or the OMP plugged into the harness either on or off the engine
various load sensors omitted will prevent the engine from going into idle timing mode properly, but it is not required and is mainly for comfort and emissions.
even the TPS could be omitted but i wouldn't advise it unless it was absolutely necessary as it helps prevent backfiring and what controls decel fuel cut.
ECT is also optional but no reason to omit it, cold start and cold drivability will severely suffer.
the more that is stripped the less the car will behave and will run erratically from cold to warm. the engine really does not need much to actually run though. the AFM, ignition system, CAS and injection system are the only critical components. the pressure sensor adjusts load timing, without it you would have a rather linear ignition timing curve which results in less power, higher fuel consumption and higher internal temperatures.
base timing should be set and marked before stripping an engine down to those specs because it may be literally impossible to properly time it otherwise.
