I would argue the VERY first things to with and FD is to put in a Downpipe and a new radiator. An intercooler is not going to really bring down the temps, you need a bigger, better radiator. The FD is one hot running BAMF and the stock temp gauge is more like an idiot light then a gauge, and if it goes up it's already too late.
The FD has an inadequate cooling system in stock form that reduces the engines life.I lost my first engine to bad water seals. I did a few little things with my FD, like the Miata fan Switch Mod, and duct taping all the air passages to be sure the air was passing through where it should.
I'm going to do the modification of the stock gauge as well to make it become accurate sometime after my FC work is done. and maybe the Evans coolant running at 0 psi to releive some of the stress caused bya pressurized system, like blwoing the AST, as the AST adds valuable coolant capacity.
Seriously, keep your FD cool and it will run a good long time.

Both motors last a long time with proper maintenance. If you buy a car and are planning to rebuild the motor, then get the internals cryo treated and use a good brand seal. Also, get a good radiator and have a good fan setup. If you do all of the simple maintenance mods then you should be stomp on your car as much as you want. Just remember that when you stomp on any car, no matter how good of care you give it, it will fail prematurely from all of the stress. A good example would be to come by my local tranny shop and see all the sTi and WRX's in there getting worked on...
