Bad salvage yard experience.

Well, I tried to go to a local import salvage yard today to find a few miscellaneous interior pieces that are broken on my car. I walk in, and try to tell the owner that I'm just going to go back in the yard to look for a few interior pieces. He proceeds to give me the third degree, asking me all these questions, and being completely rude about it. I answer his questions, and tell him I just want to go out and see if he has what I'm looking for. He sais he can't let me go out there alone, and one of his guys has to accompany me. That's when I tell him that I really don't want to do business with him anymore, and I left.

Is this guy so scared I'm going to steal something from his junk yard? All I had on me was a phillips and slot screwdriver. He treated me like I'm some punk 16 year old kid. I may not be real old, but I am 22, and I have a pretty good job. In fact, I probably make more money than that guy.

Has this ever happened to any of you guys? Isn't the point of a salvage yard so you can go look around and try to find the part your looking for without some mechanic hovering over you making sure you don't steal something.

Thanks for listening, I just needed somebody to vent to.

Wow. That is really weird. I have never had any problems w/ junkyard guys, but I assume since you are in a bigger city (I live in College Station) that may be the problem. But even when I have headded to Houston to look around, they are cool. Just let it go, and head to another junk yard!

While I don't know the exact circumstances, you do have to understand...it's a salvage yard. There are numerous wrecked cars and parts all over the place. His concern stems from liability. What would happen if you received a cut on your arm from a rusty body panel? What would happen if you stepped on a nail on his property. He would be responsible. Therefore it is not uncommon to have an employee accompany you through a salvage yard. After all, it's not a pick-a-part place. It's a salvage yard. Please look at it from his point of view.

the only junkyard around here with RX-7s, has a policy of no tools allowed inside the yard. You go look and if you find something you want/need, they get the part out for you.

there are other junkyards "U-pick", you take out whatever with your own tools and pay for the parts.

I understand the liability aspect of it, but every other salvage yard I've ever been to has been cool about it. In fact, they usually have a sign posted right by the entrance that sais they aren't responsible for accidents that happen in the yard. Every time I've dealt with this guy in the past, it's always been a hassle. What if I was buying an engine from him. Would one of his henchmen have to stand there the whole time to make sure I don't poke myself with something sharp? Let's be real, salvage yards exhist so you can find hard to find parts, and get them for a cheap price, because you are providing the labor yourself.

If everyother yard is like that then they havent gotten in trouble with someone that hurt themselves. All yards I know of around here are like that... Unless you know them like I do Also writing on a piece of paper that if you get hurt you wont blame them and signing it might be reassurance... I know the U Pull it yards here MAKE you do that, and they inspect tool boxes when you leave. But its cool and I Understand them, and I understand this guy for not letting you go in there.

I had an experience like that. I hear this junk yard has some rx-7's so i think....hey lets check it out. I go in start walking into the yard and this guy screams from his office "Where the **** do you think your going" i was like....uhh to look at car parts? He's like well you comin here and ******* talk to me before you go snooping. Well this place was just a dump and i took off. And ate up the gravel parking lot

I guess I should clarify things a little. I have been to this salvage yard a few times before, and pulled parts without a babysitter. I can also understand salvage yards checking tool boxes and things like that. In fact I used to work Loss Prevention for a major retail chain, so I understand wanting to protect your property. I guess what got me so upset is just the manner in which this guy conducted business. He was extremely rude to me, and he acted like my business wasn't worth his time. It was basically like it was such a hassle to him that I wanted to give him some of my money. If he had simply taken the time to explain to me why he wouldn't let me go out there alone, I would have fully understood. As it stands, he won't be getting any of my business or referrals in the future.
