Bad oil control ring?

I did an oil change over the weekend and put the usual 20w50 in it and put about 6.5 quarts in it (normally only put about 6.1 since thats what chilton says). I noticed today that it is starting to smoke a little... I checked the oil level and it is slightly above full, would this cause it to burn oil? I rebuilt this motor a little more than a year ago and mildly ported and haven't put anymore than 7k on it since it was stored over the winter.
Thanks!
Justin

I only put in 5 quarts. Do you drain the oil cooler also?
