BAD battery wiring!!

i went to change the battery on my 88 RX7 i just bought, and found that some one did shitty job the last time it was changed. i don't know how this works but there appears to be a small red and small black wire that were some how smashed on to the battery poles, with the respective battery cables. the cables themselves were not only mangled but their positioning in relation to the battery itself was like nothing i have ever seen. i will happily post up pic tomorrow, but in the mean time if you have any idea of what I'm talking about or what this could be please let me know.

it's called "laziness". the PO could have easily crimped on a ring terminal and mounted it to the main terminal but i find alot of people just can't be bothered to do such a simple thing.

Red face

I even tried tracing the small wires back to their source but it was hard to say exactly. It look almost as if the wires ran to this aftermarket ignition box, or im not sure really. I'll have to post up pics later. Im not sure how to even re-attach the main battery cables now because the cables in there are not red & black. They're both black and they are taped together just enough to be able to attach them to the posts of the battery, but I'd prefer not to electrocute myself and die under the hood of the RX7 before Christmas.

Its pretty difficult to electrocute yourself in the engine bay... unless you are playing with the coil. 12v from the battery isn't going to kill you. Lick your fingers, and touch the terminals...

Heh.. I had a friend that thought it would shock him.... I laughed for like.... DAYS.

Sounds like somebody installed an alarm.... you said it runs up into an aftermarket ignition box.. Is it near the steering column?

PICS!

those look like pretty standard rx-7 battery cables. they're most likely the stock ones. the small wires are some after market thing that someone was lazy installing something. it's probably garbage anyway if you don't eve know what it is. post a pick of what they lead too. the cables aren't supposed to be black and red.

I relocated my battery so I'm not sure about the stock wires, but I'm pretty sure your new battery is in there backwards. the rubber cover is supposed to be on top of the + terminal.

*just saw the box in one of the pictures*

that's an old jacob's ignition. I would see if you can either uninstall it carefully and install it correctly or just try to uninstall it and get a new ignition. you can probably just leave it off, it probably isn't helping very much anyway.

The wires could be for anything but are probably for the ignition box on the fan shroud.

Replace those battery cables as well.

I know, I gotta do something about those cables. They're pretty bad. I have only replace the cables on mustangs before though. It's not hard to do on these cars I imagine? Any walkthroughs or a quick step by step perhaps?

I gotta keep that ignition system for a while, but are you saying that I should move the box?

This may help some:
http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/grounding.htm

Basically you just go to an auto parts store and buy replacement cables that match the old ones as close as possible. The battery + cable goes to the starter motor and then has a smaller wire that goes to the main fuse. The negative bolts to the shock tower.

Box is fine where it is.
