backlight and gauge out

just wondering what i would need to fix the wire behind the gauge head console face. the gauge and the backlights are out and i know where the problem lies. question is, how can i safely take out the console behind the steering wheel without breaking anything? do i have to take off the steering wheel?? **** i hope its not a lot of work. any input would be great.
