backfiring?

im not very good with engines, and one of my friends told me my car sounded like it was backfiring, or misfiring, and he started to explain something about the pistons and i told him there was no pistons...

what can i do about the backfiring?

he said it means im getting less power than i should be,

i have an 87 (so the title says) non-turbo, the door panel says 10/86 though.

does anyone know what i can do?

Backfiring is normal for rotary engines because they run so rich all the unburnt gas will ignite once u let off the throttle or after you hit the revlimiter. Which is why you see some rx7s shooting flames out the exhaust.

But if you are backfiring alot , then you probably have a vacuum leak letting in unmetered air (causing it to backfire) , youll need to get that fixed you can check your vacuum hoses for cracks, you can also buy carbcleaner and spray it on all the vacuum hoses and listen for air coming out (while the car is running).

Also rotary engines run very high exhaust temperatures which probably contributes to the backfiring. ( im not 100% sure just what i think)

Afterburn is what wtfdidusay82 is referring to. Does it happen after you take it past ~5k and let off the throttle abruptly?
