Question backfires.... and won't crank back up.

Ok, guys here’s the deal. I’ve overheated my 1988 GTU. I know that it is eating coolant. It still runs, but now it seems to have a very weird problem as far as running. It’s pretty much impossible to drive at the moment. I am going to try to describe everything that’s going on here. I get in the car, crank it, it idles and the problem starts when I start driving it. Within a few minutes of driving, it starts backfiring very badly and dies. When it dies, it will not crank back up until I let it sits for maybe 30 minutes or so. Get back in, start driving, and same thing, over and over again. I’m not sure what’s causing this backfiring, and it doesn’t matter how much gas I give it, it dies. Could it me that the motor is just on it’s last leg. I was thinking maybe the spark plugs, since it seems to foul them out every few months. Also, my tach stopped working for a minute. I restart the car and the tach works again. I heard that could have something to do the the trailing coil/igniter, but not sure. Haven’t done a compression check or pressure check to see how badly the seals are damaged. Any ideas on things to check? Thanks in advance!!!!

We'll do sometime this week. Any other ideas? Before the backfiring incident, it ran fine, except for eating coolant.

Check your timing. Also, if it's running really rich, your O2 might be bad. I'd go ahead and buy some new plugs and wires for the car. Also, it is very possible that the motor is just on it's last leg. Car's with low compression generally have trouble with hot starts, but start fine when they are cold.
