Backfires at 4K RPM...why?

Hey guys, I have a N/A vert and I was 'opening it up' on the hwy and while I got up to 4,000 RPM, the car would backfire as I changed gears....why does that happen?

By the way, I have no cats if that means anything...

Thanks!!!!

having no cats can allow the car to backfire and shoot flames, but i always thought it was at much higher RPMs

no i have gutted my cats and then the car would backfire so i got a striaght pipe welded instead of the cat then it stopped what was happening is that it makes like a gas chamber and its so hot it backfires kinda hard to explain
