Bönez Race Pipe
Hey, I want to get that race pipe and have some stupid questions, so could you please answer them?
1. If I get that, is it gonna replace both the pre-cats and the main cats?
2. Am I still gonna be street legal?
3. Can I install it myself?
4. Is it the best mod I can do for my car for about $200?
5. Am I gonna shoot flames?
Thanks.

1.It will replace both cats.
2.You will not be street legal if you have emissions. .tested my '90 GXL with the race pipe (inspector didn't notice, but it can be a huge fine if they find out) and my unburnt fuel was in the 1000's. Put the cats back on and it was something like 6.
3.Install is a snap. Just be sure to get the mounting hardware because, while the converter has studs, you will have to run bolts through the Y-pipe with the Bonez. Putting the cats back on is the hardest part, when needed (heavy)
4. I don't think its the greatest. The quality looked like something made in a high school shop class. It is packed stainless steel on the inside, though. I guess its a good place to start but maybe spend a little more for headers?
5. I doubt you will shoot flames with just a race pipe. I tried many times but never could see any light in the mirror.
Good luck its really a decent mod I was just a little unimpressed with the quality. Smells bad too and it will turn your bumper brown. Sound is good much more throaty but not too loud.

Thanks!
I'm in Orange County, CA. My car is stock.
Oh and with the bumper turning brown, is it really bad? Or is it not very visible?
Sorry for being so ignorant my 7 is my first car.

Just like every one else said but it also adds a nice sound without being too loud. I think the previous comment about turning the bumper brown is a isolated case, I do not have any added problems and mine ever smelled bad, just smelled like new exhaust parts for the first couple of hours of run time.

there is away around that but i forget how to do it, a little back pressure is ok but to much will damage the engine, but you will get power loss and that is not what you are trying to do

race pipe won't add back pressure it will decrease it.
The aux port actuators will not function on your '88 because its backpressure activated. You will have to tie them open or go with the electronic actuation do a search for that

Ahhh!! It's so complicated! I'll just go with intake then, & save money for exhaust.
Thanks for your help!
electronic 6 ports actuation, for those looking for it: http://www.fc3s.org/6-ports.html

I looked into a Bonez unit, but I decided on a Racing Beat header and presilencer combo. $400 for both brand new, shipped to my door, and the presilencer still allows for backpressure, so the ports still work. The only problem, one will not fit without the other. With a N1 catback (like I have ) you won't be able to STOP shooting flames!! I can't wait for my presilencer to come in the mail!!!!

You are wrong about your ports not working, the bonez unit has the fittting to attach your 6port hose to it. It was made to keep your ports in working order. And as far a hp gain I sawa considerable difference once the pipe was in place and 50 pounds of converter was gone.
