Average Price for a FC Paint Job

I'm trying to figure out how much I should pay for a paint job for my FC. I'm going to be getting some estimates soon but I thought I'd ask how much you guys paid.

Here's the info:

Currently I have a '88 Black GTU. A PDR guy will be removing two very minor dents before it gets painted. I want to keep it Black but I want a few coats of clear coat over it. I'm really not sure about the brand of paint but I'm thinking ppg or 3m.

Thanks in advance.

Paint is expensive no matter what if you want a good job. Anything less than $3000 and they're cutting corners. And that's assuming no body work is needed.

Mine cost....a lot.

Hmmmmm.....I paid about $1200.00 and that was with labor. I would not call it "show" quality but it looks nearly as good as the original factory paint. They didn't get overspray anywhere and most people would have a hard time telling it's a repaint.

A paint job is all about the prep work. $800 = little prep work. May look good but how long will it last. $4000 from a good shop should look new for 5 years depending on paint. As far as brands go, PPG, 3M, Dupont, Sikens, etc. makes paint lines for one-day, maaco as well as lines that cost over $1000 per quart. Be more concerned with the line of paint (quality) rather than who makes it. They all make High quality as well as econo.

How much does a gallon of paint cost and how much would be enough to paint a whole car.. I am thinking about doing ALL of the bodywork myself, buying the paint and I get 50% off labour because I work at a shop with a paint booth. You can get gallon jugs of metallic paint off ebay for 30 bucks.

well it really depends on what kinda paint you want.. sky is the limit. but just so that you get the figres.. it is 30 bux for a quart of jet black. or any plain color.. it goes up from there. ohh yeah this is du pont by the way.. also you will need a reducer for that . which cost 15 bux or so per quart.. you will need 3 of each to do a full 3 coats or so.. maybe even 4 if you stretch the paint.. and as for the clear it cost 50 bux a pint. plus a activator for 20 bux per quart.. the ration for the clear is 1/2 of activator to a qurt of clear.. i hope that made sense.lol .. oh well i hope that helps

Macco does suck, before my FC i had an '85 celica that i took to Macco and after about four months of being painted the paint was already bubbling up and flasking off eventhough i took care of it the way they said for me too.

ryandogg....Where'd you get that lower lip on the front bumper? That looks nice. Not to "over done". Would it fit an '89 or do they make one for '89 indented shape? How much was it?

I need to get my 91 TII repainted. The paint is flaking off like the car has a disasease. My biggest concern is this. That I will take it some place to that dosn't give a damn about my car. Like the last place that my other rx-7. They did ALL of the sanding and prep work with the hood up, the windows down, and the hatch open. Ok, they cleaned up inside. But the engine bay was clean and they didnt try to clean it.

I hate places like that.

I tried to stay cool and figured maybe it was just a wierd coincidence but I've had enough of this ******* loser.

I have his full name, address, phone #, pics of liscense plate on car etc...

Anyone live near anchorage?

Search the forum for this little bitch. I prolly paid for that new paint job

DO NOT TRUST HIM OR BUY ANYTHING FROM HIM

tools i used is a 49.99 dollar cheapspry gun from lowes..
399 dollar 33 gallon 150psi air compressor
some various sanding (wet) paper..
and a respirator(gas mask)
.. when you sand your car. do not sand all the way to the metal. if you do primer asap.
i sanded the whole car with 400 grit, basically i just took off the clear coat.
and for those ding and rust(which i dont have), has to be bondo'd, primered, then resand everything you primer. also buy some wax and grease remover. which can me bought at any paint automotive store. wipe down and then recheck for imperfections.. if found re do portion. until you think its perfect, untill then you should start painting.. painting is the easiest part.. i know this explanation isnt very extensive.. but just so you get the idea..

under the hood. in the fuse box. pull out the retractor fuse..

then straight below the headlights. reaching from the front of the bumper. right under the headlight motor..
should be a rubber cover for ****.. remove cover. if you still have the cover/ turn the **** to desired height. save the fuse for later ..just incase when you get sick of the sleepy look.
IMPORTANT: do not put backthe fuse on the box. this will cncel your sleepy eyes setting.. you will have to do the same steps all over again..
