I have a 86 fc 13b na with an auto trans .. FOR OUT OF CAR USE .What I am wondering about is weather the Mazda auto trans, when the selector is in 2nd. does it start in second like the ford c6 or does it start in first and shift to second like the chevy turbo 350?? Also can the trans be locked up and the overdrive activated at any speed ( or even before the the vehicle moves )with an electrical switch ..??

 

It's a Jatco (which is a Nissan brand) L4N71B transmission. I don't have an answer to whether it starts directly in 2nd or not, but I suspect the answer is no. Few A/T transmissions work that way in my experience.

While it does have a lockup and overdrive solenoid, this tranny is not truly electronically controlled. It's probably closest to a GM 700R4. It uses line pressure, throttle pressure, and governor pressure to control shift timing, lockup, etc hydraulically. I don't think you will be able to engage the overdrive or lockup band. Look at the diagram on page 7 of the A/T section in the training manual. The lockup solenoid drains governor pressure when engine vacuum is high, but it doesn't really control lockup like an electronically controlled A/T.

The FD automatic transmission is much closer to a 4L60E or E40D and has full electronic control.
