automatic transmission fluid recommendations

Okay. I my shop manual says put dexron II fluid in the auto trans. Can't seem to find it. Is dexron III okay or am I asking for trouble. And, I know that 5-speeds are better than automatics and I should swap it, which is in the plans. Just not yet. And what about all these auto trans additives out there, that supposedly keep the temp down and treat the fluid. A bunch of crap or legit. Any brand suggestions. Thanks a lot.

Dexron-III is backwards compatible with Dexron-II, so no worries there.

I just did mine this weekend, dropped the pan, changed the filter, and as much fluid as I could. FYI it only takes about 4 Qts to refill it when you are just dropping the tranny pan. Not the full 7.5 Qt Capacity. Just be sure to check the level when your all done.
