Automatic stalling in gear

Hey i'm picking up this automatic '89 and it has a small problem. the car stalls out when in gear after warm-up, and will not accelerate past 4K while in gear, and shifts extremely hard. On start-up, while it is idling at 2K, when i put it in gear, RPM's drop to 1100 and the car seems to lurch forward. I wanted to know if this is a problem with the transmission, or if it has other underlying problems. The engine was recently rebuild, about 50 miles ago with 2-piece seals, so i know the compression is good. If anyone has any input; i would appricate it, 'cause i don't want to take the time to swap in the manual if the problem is not with the transmission.

Thanks Guys

have you checked for engine error codes, just to make sure the problem is not engine related?

and I am assuming that the ATF is within specs (enough in there and not burnt/dirty).

Well, the trans fluid is within specs and not dirty, but is slipping like a mother. the engine is also stalling under load at idle. I want to check the TPS and any other load sensors that people suggest, but i am unfamiliar with the series 5; i have two '87's, but this is my first '89. any diagnostic to check this problem would be great. The new engine seems to have no power, and it hardly goes higher than 5 grand, even in first gear.
wierd huh?
