Yeah your first few events it doesn't matter if you're driving a Toyota Echo or an RX-7, you need to get used to the sport. And don't start tuning the car until you're satisfied with your driving skills or you'll run around in circles.

Also airing up the tires to 40 is a bad idea, every tire offers the best performance at a certain pressure that can only be tested on a skidpad. I would run 5psi lower than max rated and adjust for steer characteristic preferences. And IIRC most economy/ all seasons are rated to 40psi max so that could be dangerous when they get hot.

bottom line, it doesn't matter what you run, you'll loose more time just concentrating on how to learn to drive than you will messing with those tires.

you won't be competitive without tires with a tread wear below 200 anyway, so it doesn't matter.

Don't drive another car. Learn YOUR car.

205

thanks.. im going to get tires on my vert wheels and there will be an autocross school in my area soon...

should i have 205 all around?

i know on some cars like the s2k you have to have some stagger in the rear so the car dosent slide around like crazy...

I assume your wheels are the same size all around, so running 205 on all 4 corners would be preferable. Squeezing much more tire on a 7" wide wheel is going to be difficult.

Just get a good set of street tires and run the crap out of them. I started autox with full coilovers and crazy street tires. Not a good starting point. Learn how your car reacts, how its suspension loads, then start going to the track.

Stock verts are 15x6.5 I believe so 205 would be a good size, anything wider is not recommended. And no, these are not the type of cars that oversteer with bone stock suspension. If you are on stock alignment you'll understeer like crazy and probably have excessive wear on the outer edges of the front tires.
