"ATF" Small Problem

Ok so i did some searching, and found many of the same threads. Most of all Tranny swaps & redline and purple royal. Which didn't really help me with my problem.

So lets begin, I have an auto trans for my 86 gxl. My tranny started to slip. My dip stick shows i have enough fluids in my trans. So i change my trans filter. While i was doing that. I notice when i remove the pan or oil pan from the tranny to get to the filter. No more then a quart of old oil came out. Ok so my friend added some oil from the top where the dip stick is. He knows more about cars then i do, so i thought it was all right. I think he added to much, because when i remove the dip stick while the car is cool. It show that i have to much oil in the trans. When the car is running. and i move it in all gears. And check it in each gear. It show that i have no oil in there. Then when the car is cooling off or cool down. It show that i have to much oil. Hmmmm???? Need help, Don't no what that means and how i should handle it. Any help would be nice. Thanks!

Go drive around, get the tranny warmed up, then check the fluid in park.

I hear you are supposed to check autos when the tranny is fully warmed up.

your still low on oil. there should be a cold and hot mark on your dip stick, or there will be 2 marks. when the engine is cool and running it should be at the lower mark and after the car is hot it, should be at the upper mark. you dont check your fluid when the car is off.

So im not much an automatic transmission person. But when you pulled the pan was there any traces of clutch material...shinny stuff. How does the shifty act can you feel the rpm rise and the car not move. then does it shift in hard. from what i know of low fluid levels that seems to be a pretty big symptom. although 1 quart came out when you pulled the pan there is still some fluid in the clutch packs. Ive heard the longer you can leave the pan off the more oil you can get to drain the better. When checking trans fluid the transmission should be warm run through all gears and the go back to park with the engine idling check the fluid level. how much fluid did you put in after dropping the pan? sounds like you just have a low level to me i would recommend filling to the correct level, then search for leaks... probably the lines to the cooler. and see how the transmission shifts. hope this helps good luck.

There used to be one of these POS' in my 88. If it's over filled, you can syphon it out through the fill tub with a long, thin tube from lowes, rather than drop the pan again. Check it warm after going through the gears. If it's dead, you're better off doing a manual swap. Put in a 4.1 LSD while it's down.
