Assuming cats = clogged is causing boost problems, what next?

I really just want to fix the problem with the exhaust, and I figure I might as well get a full exhaust while I'm at it.

BUT I don't have the $$ to buy fuel mods at this time. Should I just get the FCD and call it good? Will my engine still be happy with a full Turbo back HKS exhaust system? Basically, I'm looking at making my mods list this:
HKS full Turbo back exhaust
Fuel Cut Defencer made by (insert name of good company here)

Would that still be safe with everything else stock? I've been mulling over this for a few days now and just want to get it resolved.

And on a last note, anyone in the area have a FCD they want to sell?

So your going to be running open intake and open exhaust? This is kinda the same problem im facing in trying to get as much power as i can, but limit boost till i can afford some injectors and a fuel controller.

If you dont have the stock air box, but have availability to get one, then that would help limit boost, porting the stock wastegate would also help.

God is it expensive to have a turbo

Yeah it is.. I WOULD port the wastegate, but I'm not about to yoink off the turbo.. no way.. the engine is IN the car, and it ain't coming out, and I'm not killing myself trying to get the sucker unbolted.

Yeah I have a stock airbox, I suppose I could almost even put a restrictor in it, that would limit boost.. good idea. I think I'm gonna do that.

But if I don't NEED to.. would a full exhaust with stock intake and a FCD be safe to run without upgraded fuel?

My engine lasted a whole 6,000mi with full exhaust and intake.

full exhaust = you need fuel mods.

Hi, I was faced with the same problem.. here's what I did, hope this helps.

I had a clogged cat and no cat-back so I decided to just get the full RB exhaust but that drained my funds so I wasn't able to do the rest of the job, i.e. fuel..

so here's what you could do, just get the exhaust and go easy on her until you get more funds, that's all.. if you can't resist like me first get an aftermarket boost gauge. Then you could put a restrictor in the airbox. I took a hard piece of plastic, drilled some holes in it and threw it in. What I've noticed is it doesn't really lower the boost as far as I can tell, just keeps it from raising so fast, but watch the boost. The restrictor is a real performance killer but safer than nothing. As far as an FCD goes, I would save your money. Putting that on with a full exhaust may cause you to lean out. Without it you might hit fuel cut, but I think that'd be better than the FCD risk. Overall, you'll save 50-100 bucks, then come up with 300 and get your ecu reprogrammed.

End result, you don't have to port the wastegate, no fuel cut and a safe fuel map up to the desired boost which will prolly be around 11-12 on a s4 with full exhaust which is as high as you want to go with the stock turbo. Forget a cone intake, but do pull the restrictor out.

OH! I almost forgot, you should definately upgrade your fuel pump, a $100 walbro is good. Rewiring is a good idea too. Stock secondary injectors should be fine if clean. I got the fuel pump at the same time as the exhaust but you COULD put it off if you're planning on taking it easy for a while.

Good luck, Colby
