how do you know when one is out?

i didnt know that apex'i made seals for our cars. Now if you're talking about apex seals, just search for "blown engine" or something similar and read up. generally the car just runs like absolute crap. A compression test will tell you too. one high spike and two low ones is usually an apex seal.

Also, be careful about clubbing those seals, many people dont agree with doing that.

The car will run like the proverbial "bag of ****" - weak, rough idle, reluctant to rev, poor power - a lot like a old Firefly winter beater I had, that threw a rod and became a 2 cylinder. Mind, that car ran like that before it threw the rod, it just did it all more!

Comp test, as above, will tell.
