Apex seals?

Hi all,

I am having a Nightmare, my car decided on Sunday that it did'nt like Idleing at 750rpm and droped to 250rpm or even lower. The funny thing is it seems to be intermitant, one minute its fine then the revs drop.
The other thing that makes me think it may be the Tips is it's hard to get started from cold or if left for 20mins it's a pain to start.

On the other hand we have just had some realy heavy rain and i am woundering if somthing has got damp as i was driving home (not Thrashing it) and i pulled up at some lights and the revs droped for the first time and my problems just went from there.

My car is a Stock 1990 Rx7 Turbo 2, to be honist i am praying it's not the seals as i had other plans for the money.

Your opinions would be most apreciated.

Sounds like the TPS could be a lil out of adjustment. Check that and the BAC valve.

Injectors leaking could be causing it to flood and have a hard time starting. Were they replaced/cleaned when the rebuild went in?

I dont know, there is'nt any fuel around the Injectors? could they need cleaning?

So tomorow i have to check the Compretion,Tps and Bac.

How would i tell if the Injectors are not 100%?

I've just been out in it and there seems to be very little power loss and when moving it does'nt feel any diffrent.

mmm we'll see what happens.

What would the car feel like if it has done a Apex seal? would i feel a difrence when driving?

If it was an apex seal, it wouldn't idle fine one minute then bad the next. It would run bad ALL the time.

? Thats Intresting? would an Inlet leak cause it not to start very easly?

I have been having problems finding my O2 sencer wire after it snaped so i took the top inlet off and have just put it all back together but it was running fine, aprox 1 week later it started playing up.

What do you think?

Right forget the Idle thing what would cause it to not start?

I mean you turn it over for 10-15 seconds before it starts?

I was thinking along the lines of Apex Seals but but what else would do that? i can understand any one of loads of things could cause the Idle problem but i can'nt get my head round why it does'nt like starting?

Any idears?

Low compression during cranking, caused by excess gas washing away the oil that creates the seal, or low compression as a result of wear. How does it crank? Fast? Slow? Comparing to normal wur wur wur wur...

Normal realy? it just cranks over for ages.

The thing that gets me is it just went like this overnight and i have done a Compretion test and nothing realy Bad. I did the check with the Fuel pump fuse out and the Plug leads off.

The engine is'nt that old 10,000 miles it had a rebuild 3 years ago.

If your O2 wire is still off I would fix that first. The ecu has more than likely gone into limp home mode that would explain the screwy idle.if you have fixed that check for vac leaks.

Next time you go to turn the car off, pull the fuse for the fuel pump and let it die (depressurizing the fuel system). That way you know if you have leaky injectors. Next time you goto start, pop in the fuse, and try.

Yeh i have run a wire from the O2 to the Ecu direct but that has been off for some time and made little difrence when i conected it up.

I have heard that a dodgy injector could cause the none starting thing but would it not run properly and would'nt i smell fuel or more to the point see it?

The best way to detect an intake leak is to start the car an spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifold. If it idles faster when it gets spayed where there is a gasket, then it is a leak. Just a cheap way to find intake leaks...

Right this is geting weird! i can get it to Idle at 1100rpm realy well and drive like there was nothing wrong, But if i reduce the revs to anything under 1000 rpm it just hunts between 1000 and 600 rpm.

Aslo i have noticed it makes a realy quite loud sucking noise when you turn it off (for about 1 second simalar to an Induction noise after the engine has stoped)does this sound normal?

I did a compretion test again and still well over 100psi. I also tryed runing it out of fuel (ie pull the Fuel pump fues whils it was running) it still would'nt start properly. i have put a load of Injector cleaner in just to see if it made a diffrence.

I am now thinking along the lines it may be a inlet leak or just admit the Tips need replacing?

Te thing is once you get it going and it does'nt drop below 1000 rpm it runs very well?

So any sugestions? What do you Guys think pull the Engine or keep playing and hope it goes away?

Check the operation of your BAC valve. Mine was coaked with carbon oil stuff and was sticky. it caused an unsteady idle.

Also, two common places for intake leaks;
1. The plastic hose going from the BAC to the front of the car. it cracked on my car.
2. The TID (rubber hose connected from air box to the turbo) will get hard from the heat of the turbo and could crack. Mine cracked here too.

I have some pictures at home, if you need, PM me or drop an email.
