Anyone use Gasket Maker on the water pump?

The rubberish OE gasket that is between the water pump housing and the front cover craked as I was removing the assembly.

My question is...can I use this "RTV Silicone Waterpump and Thermostat Gasket Maker" instead of the actual gasket? Will it form a good seal? also, what torque should I use on reasembly. I am guessign the tourqe should be less than if I was using the actual gasket?

Thanks,
-a

Just use a gasket man. Small price to pay to not have to do the job again. Not sure on the torque but look it up. And don't forget to use a cris-cross patern when snuging up the bolts.

My gasket was gone when I was rebuilding my engine and the one in the gasket kit was for the S5 water pump, I wasnt going to wait around a new gasket to show up, so I used the exact same permatex stuff he is talking about, works fine. Go ahead and use it.

yes, it will work, but make sure the gasket surfaces are clean. and dont use that copper **** for coolant seals. I used the copper gasket maker with the cracked stock gasket and it leaked. so i stripped the gasket and maker, lightly roughed the contact surfaces with some sandpaper, and cleaned them with some water based thinner. havnt had any leaks yet.

I use RTV almost everywhere - never had a problem.
Blue on coolant, red on block-offs & intake.

Just follow the directions.

i have three different-four-different kinds of gasket maker. from what ive seen either the orange/red or the grey should do just about anything. Also, dont torque down too tight, i broke a bolt on my water pump, luckily i had one in the garage that fit perfectly. Oh, and give it at least a few hours before driving it again.
