Anyone try to invert the air pump pulley?

To clarify...what I mean is to invert the actual pulley on the airpump so that it would line up with the second pulley on the crank instead of the third pulley its currently running off of?
Do you think it would line up?

And for all those who are going to chime in here with useless crap like: why do this, or just ditch the air pump, etc...

I'm doing this so I can get a second belt on the alternator, and still keep my air pump.

Couldn't you just get a longer belt to go around the alternator, airpump, and waterpump?

Yea but if you serpintined it this way, wouldn't the waterpump be spinning backwards? think about it.

If the belt were to touch all the parts, it would be in this order

-alt-waterpump-mainpully-airpump then back to alt.

Not even sure if that would work... lol

What you'd have to check is that the spacing would be proper with the pulley reversed, it's not automatic that it will. Then you'll have to take into consideration that you'd then be underdriving it, as the front pulleys are smaller.

Why would you bother with that? Alternator slippage is not a problem because the belt contacts nearly half the pulley's circumference. The only reason people need two belts on the alternator is so the water pump doesn't slip when the air pump is removed. With the air pump still in place you will not have any slippage unless you have old and/or loose belts.

I know thats what the majority opinion is...but I AM getting alternator slippage!
I've been chewing thru a bunch of alt belts. They sqeek for a day, and then they snap in half.

I'm using a brand new Gatorback belt, stock size, with the FD alt bottomed out on top of the waterpump housing. I'm using the double Higgi pulley. Its properly tensioned - deflecting about 1/4 inch at the longest part.

I've tried everything to troubleshoot this problem, including getting the alt tested. Everything checks out fine.

Thats why the last thing I can thing of is to put another belt on the pulley so that the contact patch is doubled.

Then you're problem is the altenator, not the belt. You need to make sure it's lined up correctly with everything else and that it spins freely.

Isn't there supposed to be more then 1/4" deflection on most belts anyways? I don't see how slippage is snapping multiple belts. My Accord used to slip on the power steering every day until the engine was warmed up, and I never replaced that belt in the two years I owned it (might be a different type of pulley though).

Look man, if your car is eating belts then it's a sign of something larger going wrong and you need to solve it. Putting 2 belts on might help, but eventually it'll eat both belts as well.

Do you have a big stereo pulling on the alt all the time???

I would agree that there is something not lined up. Or the Alt is freezing up somehow.

What they said. Two belts will not fix this problem.

Check that there is nothing wrong with the pulley's either.
Rusty or grooved bad.
