allright i put this in the audio section but no one seems to know in there so i was going to see if you guys know. so i have a 88 tII and the speakers are 4 inch in the dash. i was wondering if there is anyway i can get 5.25 in there. ill see what you guys think.

Hmm I was trying to figure this out myself, I opened up and looked at the 4's... Unfortunately the way it comes out of the Turbo II I think you would have to cut away at that vent thats in the way on the passanger side. I didn't even look at the driver side yet... From the outside it looks like it doesn't have much room to spare either... You might be able to get one in there, but it probbably wouldn't be straight, because when putting the 4" in there its already tight, but at an angle you might be able to get it in and some how attach it..

Myself im going to find some decent 4" for the front and some really nice speakers for the back to make up for the not so great 4".... Since fabricating speaker holes doesnt entertain me enough to do so... not when theres other parts that need to be attended to...

its sucks though i have some really good diamond audio components allready. i really want to put them in. i might check and see if i can go custom on it

no, unless you go cutting the dash up for a custom mount, 5.5" wont fit. my 4"ers barely fit. it wouldnt be to hard on the passenger side because youde just have to cut a bigger hole in that mounting plate but on the driver side it could be a real bitch. id be interested in the results if you tried.

you don't want your speakers in there anyway.. dash is a bad location for speakers.. firing downwards at your legs. Mount them on the doors instead.

Thats true you could get a GXL's models door panels which have the door speakers locations then just cut out in your door carefully and get them in there... I was thinking of doing that as well. Again all low low on THE LIST at hand. Ive seen it done in a Turbo II, and if done right it works out very nicely.

i actualy like the speakers in the dash. if you twaek everything right it can produce a pretty decent sound stage. some time down the road im gona experiment with making a-pillar pods for some 3"ers. i already checked and 4"s wont fit up there unless you wont a monstrous fiberglass moulding hanging out over your dash.

I'm trying to do the same thing now too. I got the 5 1/4 in the passenger side of my vert before i looked at the drivers side and now i couldn't get that one in. I'm really not sure hwt i will do but there are also aftermarket speakers in the door of my car. I'm not sure if that was custom or not.

I wish I had skill with fiberglass so i could make some custom kick panels (best sound staging) but i can only talk the talk, not walk the walk when it comes to car audio

would 5 1/4" speakers fit in the back, i jus got a pair of alpines that i wanna put in the back (they are suppose to b replacements)

my right hand drive car appears to have speakers both in the dash and in the door...is this normal? haven't opened up the door yet...but according to the install book the fronts and rears are both 4", the rears were...time to pull the dash ones

*edit* oops...it's an 89 GTX if that matters(fully loaded japanese model a/c, tilt, limited slip etc)

I believe they have kits out there that allow you to mount 6.5 inchers in the back. So yeah, you can make new brackets for 5.25 inchers and they'd fit fine.

I have AudioBahn 5.25" speakers in the space for the 4" speakers in the front.. I started hacking at the supports behind the driver's side speaker, to fit it in, and then I realized how easy it was to mount it in front of the hole. It looks pretty good too, with the audiobahn grills on. I don't have any pics, since I'm at work, but I can post some after I get home @ 4-5...

Here's what I did, though, in case you're playing along at home:
I got some long bolts (thin) from a local hardware store, I think they were 3" long or so, probably only 1/4"ish in diameter, really not thick at all, (make sure they fit through the holes in speaker-mounting tabs. I used two bolts to hold the speaker on, running them through two holes (I think where the stock plastic cover is supposed to go), one in the upper-right corner of the recess, and one in the lower-left. Used big washers and a teflon lock-nut. They're solid, and they look pretty good..

In my FC i'm running the following for audio: AudioBahn 5.25" in the dash, the tweets that it runs I mounted on the gauge-surround, so they're evenly spaced away from me I have Infinity 3.25" in the doors, on custom pods I made out of fiberglass, they're mounted pointing toward the passangers (towards the back of the car, they're at the front of the doors), and I'm running Pioneer 5x7"s in the back, factory slot. I had to mod the plastic surround of these to make them fit, but it sounds friggin' nice

My 10" audiobahn sub is going in a custom made box i'm fabbing up right now to mount where the spare tire went. Once I'm done with that, it'll be basically stealthed except for a hole with speaker fabric in the carpeting along the back.

Again, I'll take some pics if anyone wants to see what i'm talking about.

If you do put some up there, i would definatly be interested in seeing the results.. I tried to put the Infinity 3.25" speakers that I had up on the top of the dash somewhere, but I couldn't come up with something that wouldn't look like *** when it was done... That's why I went with speaker pods in the map-pockets..


sXeVegan - Take a stab at it Fiberglass is cheap and easy to deal with.. and kick panels shouldn't be THAT hard to make.. what you may want to do is to fill a shallow box/pan with "Great Stuff" or any other named expanding foam. then just use box cutters or an exacto knife to make shape you want. lay the fiberglass down, dremel off the edges, paint, and wha-la, you now have a custom kick panel, that all of your friends will be jealous of. And it would cost you less than 20 dollars worth of material.

sounds like a good set up...my current audio set up is kinda a bastard child...I have pioneer 5.25"s in the doors, 4" pheonix gold tantrums in the dash(probly sound the best of the bunch in my opinion), 4" alpine type S in the rear, all powered by a rockford 301X, then a 10" Ultimate Cupric in a custom box running off a rockford 301.M. All that is running off a Rockford RFX 9220 deck

The stock location in the dash is technically a true 4.5" size, just very few 4.5" speakers are sold in America so most people put in 4" speaker in.

About the back, Don't the stock 4 inch speakers fit in a plate back there? there is a plate on my car, and 61/2" fit in it just fine, you just can't put speaker covers on them. Also in my door, do I have to cut metal out because I've looked at them before, and it doesnt look like anything will fit?

I set up a 3-way front system with oversized 6-1/2" in the doors, 4" mids in the dash and 1" carbon dome tweeters on the dash (at the piller base). I connected them to Focal 3-way crossovers and would have to agree with Andrew, a very decent front sound stage.

Even after 2 years and listening to a number of other car installations I still like the way this set-up sounds and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to another 2nd gen owner!

Jus tget some good quality 4 inch component speakers. The speakers point down so it's pointless to up size, they will just make your dash rattle with bass. I bought some JBL GTO 4 inch components with 3/4 inch tweeters for my turbo like 2 yeas ago and hooked up a full system with kicker amps and 6.5 inch gto's int he rear. The dash sounds great. upsizing isn't really worth all the time modding, just buy high quality.

I know that if you still can't figure out how to mount them in the dash, there's all kinds of room in the door panels on the 86 doors, and the 88-91's have speakers already in the doors, I have one door of each on my car (dont ask me why) and I have an audiobahn component set in the doors with the tweeters mounted in the dash, I also have 6.5's mounted in the back as well, so theres definitely room for 5 1/4's or whatever you have..if you have any questions I could send you pics..
