Anyone know how to check tranny fluid?
Anyone know how to check tranny fluid?
I have an 87 base model with a manual tranny and I feel as though I'm REALLY low on transmission fluid, but I can't figure out how to to the level of it and I don't know how to fill it if I am low. Help.

Dude... might as well change your fluid while your at it..
HOWEVER
to check it... you Take the plug out of the side of the tranny (not the bottom) its a square bolt, i don't remember the size, then you put a piece of hose on the end of the bottle and squeeze it up into the hole. Whne fluid runs out the hole, the tranny is full.
I say you should prpbably change it because you should put the SAME fluid in the tranny as what is already in it and i don't know what that would be on your car, and apparently, neither do you.
to change it... remove the top plug first, then the plug on the bottom and drain all the fluid out. then plug the bottom back up and put fluid in the top until it comes out the hole. They make a pump system for this that you can get cheap at the autoparts store.
Do a search for Gear oil.. You need to use a gear oil that does not contain sulfates. our cars have brass syncros and sulfates eat them away.
I think Redline MT90 is a good choice, but there are threads out there already one what lubes to use.

Oh yeah... while your at it... you might also want to take the shifter out and replace the oil thats in there where the ball sits.. it usually finds its way out somehow, but its not part of the tranny sump intself

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. That pump that you recommended, can you also flush the entire tranny with it? I only ask because I have absolutely no idea what the previous owner used and I'd like to get all of whatever it is out. Thanks.
