I use DHL for everythign but theyre especially cheap for large items. ive shipped hoods and hatches cross country for $50ish. Just pad them and wrap them in sturdy cardboard.

Go to www.freightquote.com. You will have to ship something the size of a hood by a freight company. UPS, FedEx Ground, and DHL will not ship it because of its size. Each of those shippers have freight divisions that will ship it but they are usually not the cheapest way to go. I HAVE shipped a hood before (TII). Freighquote will give you several freight companies to choose from. You will need the measurements of the final package size and its weight to get an accurate quote from them. Also, it is usually much cheaper when using a freight company if you can ship to a business instead of a private residence. The TII hood I shipped cost $85 to ship from TN to CT. I charged the guy that bought it a little more than that because I built a wood frame covered in cardboard to get the hood to him undamaged.

Hope this helps.

Already tried UPS - they forwarded me to a freight company who quoted me $300+.

FedEx and USPS won't take it cause it's over their size requirements.

The best offer I have so far is $147 from a local freight company whom I worked with before for computer stuff. ~rich

A few months ago. i wrapped it in cardboard, gave them the weight and measurements and it cost me a little bit over $60 including the pickup charge and $300 insurance. Are you sure you gave them the correct weight and dimensions?

I have shipped hoods with UPS before. I regularly ship boxes 54x67x6 without any problems, with regular UPS pick up. Usually less than $200 for 80lbs with overnight service to TX even.

But if your local guys won't take it, then try FedEx freight (heavy weight). Different company that Fed Ex overnight. But Fed Ex Heavyweight will take it even if it is oversized. They will charge you for a 150lb box (even if it only weighs 60 lbs) but will take it anywhere.

another place to try is greyhound. they often take stuff that other shippers wont, and are relatively cheap. the problem is that you have to pick the parts up at a depot. I've had brush guards from the east coast, a saab 900 trunk lid from MA, and tires from CA all sent to WA state for less than the ordinary shippers. I think you can get an estimate from them on line. It is a little unorthadox, but a money saver. (package your stuff well, though- I do not think they are especially careful with freight). + they give discounts for military.
