anyone ever delt with FC shift forks? (kinda weird)

hey guys i bought a trans from a guy on the forum, series5 turboII trans that has great syncros, around 80k miles, etc.

well when i got the trans in the mail, it was stuck in 4th gear and we could get any of the other gears. i talked to the guy and he said the shift forks had just gotten bumped during shipping and slid down into gear. the guy said this had happened to him before, and that all we need to do was take off a few bolts and seperate the tail of the trans from the body.
we got the tail part seperated, but the shifter shaft was still holding the tail to the rest of the transmission, giving us about one or 2 inches of seperation to see the now-exposed shift forks.

NEXT: we got all the shift forks bumped up into the neutral position, even the 5th/reverse fork. now we could access gears 1-4, neutral worked and everything seemed fine so we moved over and tried to select the 5th or reverse and its like the shifter wont even try to move over far enough to access that shaft.
its like the transmission is a 4 speed that doesnt have reverse. it feels like the shaft isnt even there (though it is, and we saw it)
so we opened the trans back up and made sure that the 5th/reverse fork was in the neutral position like the rest of the forks, indeed it was.

my question.. does anyone here have experience with the FC trans guts? (turboII in particular) this is the first trans i've opened up and everything seems normal: all three shift forks are in the neutral position. is the 5th/reverse fork supposed to be in the same spot as the others when its not engaged?
we are kinda lost here and LUCKILY i do alot of around-town driving so i havent needed to use 5th reverse. could someone with some transmission experience help me out?
