I've seen 500hp+ drag launches on a stock S4 rear end......
they are new/rebuilt units (not old 125,000km ones) but they can take lots.
Go about it this way.....if you CAN build an engine that can trash a stock diff at the drop of a penny....THEN upgrade to a ford 9 inch.
I say 9 because you mentioned an 8.8 and the stock is 8.5 IIRC

depends on your goals, independents will grip better all around over solid rear axles because the wheels work independently rather than the whole rear end torquing up as well you can run more light weight components in independent rear axles for less weight than a solid diff.
you don't see solid rear axles on sports cars today. solid rear axles may be more reliable for drag racing but as i said it depends what you are building the car for and the stock TII diffs are good to handle close to 500RWHP.

You can purchase a Ford 8.8 kit, From Grannys. Its about 2k, all bolt in. Im debating whether or not to get it..the stock stuff will hold but..its only a matter of time before it starts to give out.

Do you feel lucky punk!!!
you can do it, but you will loose stability on the street. Here in PR, are one Turbo 2 with Ford 9 bolt rear differential. The car runs 10.2 on the 1/4 mile. But the car is not for street use for that reason. Also, you need to make a custon driveshaft for that purpose.

500 HP is doable as long as your budget is at least $7,000. And you use an S5 block. S4 can do it but not for too long before it fails in the pin area.
