Anyone AutoX w/o P/S?

Is it really possible? I was thinking about that as I was backing out of the parking sopt yesterday. I removed it as I reinstalled the engine, and I am just curious...

My tII didn't come from the factory with p/s at all
As long as you are above iddle it is fine. The steering might be just a tad on the heavy side, but nothing that really bothers me. I still preffer no p/s even at autox over p/s cars, at least that ones that I have driven, I didn't feel nearly as connected with the road

Oh, I love the feel on the street, I was just checkin on the AutoX course. I will have to downshift a lot more often now to keep power to the wheels!! Thanks!!

i havent auto-x the yellow car, but ive done some dorifto already. Its harder than the PS, but you can still whip the wheel around quick enough to navigate sharp turns. The 14" mazdaspeed wheel is much better than 13" MOMO i had before.

A MUST FOR AUTOX. The easier it is to steer...the faster you go.

Paul Ko recommends running a non-powered rack for a road race car. He was trying to convice me to yank my PS out of the black cosmo t2.

For a road corse..yes. But for Autox...need the p/s. You dont have time to fight the wheel...speed thought the small corse is the key.

Weight. A little less strain on the engine from the pulleys, so maybe some HP, but mainly weight.

I'm building my FP car to run with the P/S. You try to autocross with 10" wide racing slicks and you'll be convinced that its a must have item. Smaller tires may be different and since I don't drive like I'm road racing on the street I'll just keep my P/S.

FPrep... You're driving that beast on the street!

Agreed on the 10" slicks, but I doubt it would be difficult on an auto-x, especially for first timers. Just go do it!

GNX7,

Having driven the RX-7 on the street for about 2 minutes, I can't say for sure, but on the road course, steering movements aren't that dramatic or that fast, so non PS should be A-Ok. That's the way mine is setup, and every ohter prepped ITS car I've seen, is setup.

I have done all three combinations. AutoX with PS, PS removed from a PS rack and a non PS rack.

I thought that driving with PS was the hardest because the fc's have that variable thing and mine is speed sensitive not rpm sensitive and the car would jump from no ps in the straights (GOOD) to PS in the curves (bad). Then I went to the modified rack, that was better but I still had to use 2 hands in a parking lot. Now with the non ps rack I can hold a soda and do everything with 1 hand. Road feel between a modified PS rack and a non PS rack is negligible, but both have way more feel than a PS rack.

From what did you use a non power rack for your FC?

I have an 86 N/A that didn't come with PS. Personally, I hate power steering on any kind of sports car. I think it seperates you from the road. The only time it is hard to turn is below 5 mph. Over that, it's almost as easy as PS, but with better feel of the road. On the autocross course, you end up whipping the steering wheel back and forth, but there's very little effort when your at speed.

Silkworm - The FP car will be trailered to events. No headlights or brake lights and that aluminum seat will get uncomortable on the street for any amount of time.

I've had both non P/S and P/S cars for the street and I prefer P/S for the street.

You confused me with the "I don't drive like I'm road racing on the street I'll just keep my P/S." I figured an F-prep car has no business anywhere near a street corner

I run the vert at the track with no ps. Now thats a beast. I love the way it feels over having it. The first few times sucked bad and then after i got used to it I dont want to go back. I have installed my ps since my last race but I want to get rid of it. That will happen when i pull my engine and drop the other in it.
