it works better without the wood,,, but it does require better aim...
the wood absorbs it a little.....

Get a dead blow hammer its made of rubber but has metal beads inside that let it hit harder. Something to do with pysics they are like 25$ at lowes and the are good for the money. We use them at work religiously. Popping pistons in a 800 cubic inch CAT suddenly beaceme easy without punching groves in it.

The beads absorb the forces that would cause the "bounce", and it lets the entire force of the hammer transfer into the target. Hence "dead blow" - it's "dead" in that there's no bounce to it.

I've never had trouble with hitting the unfinished metal of the flywheel, but using something softer than a 9lb sledge would probably be smart.

heres a simple solution good sir. If the motor is out of the car try what i did. be prepared for some grunting but here goes. First of all get a second set of arms. a stout friend is what you shall need, next get about 3-4 feet of piping and a long handled ratchet attached to the 54mm(2 1/8in) socket. next you need a long thick screwdriver, phillips or flathead will work just fine. place the screwdriver into one of the holes atop the flywheel and make certain it is secure agaisnt the long threaded bolt/screw(cant remember what it is) use somethign to protect the threads. next comes the fun part, attache socket and ratchet and have your friend hold the screwdriver. apply the 3 foot bar to the ratchet handle and then strong arm it. if that fails then go rent some power tools.
my 2 cents

i have never changed a flywheel so i dont know if this will work. but what i do for rusted bolts is use a breaker bar and put a jack underneath and pump it till it comes loose.

I did it like any man...I simply picked the motor up, put the nut in my teeth, and twisted that bitch off.

...actually I beat the **** out of it with a hammer and a chisel...

I ended up buying one, but on the first couple of times, I rented this baby:

It's a Hitachi HW22, it's about $30 per day after tax at the local rental tools. 430 TQ , takes it off in less that 5 seconds!

The merkle of air tools - a used 60 gal. air compressor for $200 and a $60 Ingersoll Rand 231G impact gun from ebay were the best investments I've made (at least until I get a lift). The nut was off in seconds.

If all else fails, torch it. Believe me, it helps, look at my avatar

Finally came off after 1 broken breaker bar, 2 broken adapters, and a lot of amusement.
