Any tips for intake manifold R&R?

Morning all... At 8 last nite, I decided to remove and port my manifold. Little did I know how much of a PITA it would be. The FSM is sort of unclear on how exactly to do it, and I dont have a Haynes manual, so I'm flyin blind here. Any suggestions on getting the lower manifold off (the one that bolts to the motor)? I took off the unit attached to the passenger side of the manifold (damned if I know what it does...enlighten me please), but I can only find 1 of the manifold bolts (it just bolts to the engine, right?). Any tips on how to get everything back together easily/ know of any tutorials on doing so (I've been using agent_d's 86-88 r&r guide, and I've got a 90' gxl)? Any help at all would be appreciated, cause as of the current moment I've got no idea how I'm going to get it back together and working. (And yes, I've searched). Last thing....is there anything else I can/should do while I've got a lot of things apart (besides TB mod), or is there anything that doesnt have to be put back in? Thanks.

All I can say is, dont jump off the cliff until you know how deep the lake is.

OK, those lower intake bolts are hard to see, if not impossible to see with the engine in the car. Id mod the TB and get out of there. Put everything back the way it was and pray.

Don't pull the lower intake unless you have to. The gasket will split and half gets welded to the motor. It took me over 2 hours of tedious scraping to clean it up.

Hmm....I just had a thought...are you supposed to be able to remove the manifolds with the motor still in the car?

Yeah, its pretty easy to remove them in the car. But like Sureshot says, don't pull them unless you have an extra set of gaskets. Preferably a metal replacement. CJ

Talk about a leap of faith! You need a hobby if you got bored and decided to port your intake! Most people get bored and wash their car!

pp13bnos: How did you go about removing the manifolds? I'm having a pretty good deal of trouble doing it (I've never done this before)...

Ok, assuming you removed the middle intake allready. Make shure you have the 6 port actuators off. Should be 2- 10mm bolts. Remove all the oil injector lines. There should be 4 12mm bolts total. Two on the very front of the intake manifold, and two to the rear. There is also two 12mm nuts on the underside of the intake manfilold that need to be removed. Don't forget the rubber hose that goes to the cat. After those, its pretty basic. If its been on there for awhile, it may need a bit of convincing. (Rubber hammer works great ). How much have you removed? CJ

Im down to the last manifold. I took the ACV off the passenger side of it, disconnected the oil injectors, removed the vacuum hoses (except for the one to the cat, i think...if thats the hose on the passenger side, closest to the firewall). How do I remove the 6-ports? Also, I'm doing the TB mod...what do I do about cruise control, and what are the extra lines coming off the thermowax/coldstart assembly (RETed's pictures dont have these hoses). Thanks for your help!

I have mine already off and port matched. Planning to put it back together this weekend. I have new gaskets, but they are stock replacements - not metal. Is there any particular gasket sealent you would recommend ??

Port matched, injectors serviced @ RC engineering, Pineapple inserts and silicone vac lines to install. Anything I forgot to do while it is apart???

Thanks

TB mod? When you ported them, did you go by dre2000/mazdaspeed7's example and make sure to enlarge the outer ports on the lower and middle manifolds? That sounds fairly complete though...
