Any comments..

Ok ..I made my tester like it suppose to be made (under 10 bucks).
Two 12v LED's Lights, have two grounds, one live (both red wires are together).
I heated up the car. turned off the motor, then put the iginition on.
I connected the tester to the green plug, top center is live, the other two are grounds.
When I puggged that in, both lights were on. I counter clock wise turned the screw, about 1/8th heard a little click sound, and only one light stayed on.
I asssume the TPS is now adjusted. However, I have one question, when I take the screwdriver off the screw, both lighs come back on !! I touch the screw with the screwdriver, one light stays on ? Don't know is that alright, but the car now runs much better. When I start it in the morning, she rev's up to 3000 rpm's for about 45 sec's or so, then falls to 2000 rpms, then when she's hot she idles (purrs) at 7 rpms. She does not fluctuate anynore.

Any comments are appreciated, about and thanks to all for the feed back and responses from my previous posts, re: Tester.

Turn the TPS screw a bit more and then let off with the screwdriver. You only want one light on.

The one light on represents the Relief solenoid being energized. The other light off represents the switching solenoid being de-energized.

At idle only the Relief solenoid is supposed to be energized.

The TPS probably could be set by holding ones hand on the relief and switching solenoids and turning the TPS screw til only the Relief solenoid is energized. Just FYI.

Hi Hailers, I really don't understand the above para you wrote...sorry

Also, I counter clockwise almost 3/4 of the way. Is it possble that I need to go counter clockwise more ? If I play between Counter Clockwise and Clockwise...(3/4 play about) I hear a clicking sound.

The clicking is the sound of either the Relief (BLUE) or Switching (Grey) solenoid coming or going. When a light on the LED lights up, at the same moment one of those two solenoids gets energized.

If I were you, I'd get the engine HOT. Shut it off and key to ON. LED assy in place. Turn the TPS screw anti clockwise until it almost falls out, but make sure it does not fall out because then you'll spend the rest of the day finding the spring and screw

So now it's all the way anti clockwise. Now slowly turn it clockwise til one light lights up. Stop there.

Now continure turning it clockwise slowly, ever so slowly, til the second LED lights up. Stop.

Now slowly turn the screw anti clockwise til only one light is lit. Through.

You can't put any pressure on that TPS screw doing this. Use Minimal pressure as you turn the screw. Putting pressure on the screw/linkage messes you up and the setting.

Each time you saw a light light up you should have heard one of the solenoids click (being energized). NO requirement for this in the FSM or anywhere else. Just happens in real life.

I'm probably just full of IT, but I figure I could put a finger on each of the afore mentioned solenoids and by feeling them click, could set the TPS adjustment. Never done that though. I just use a simple digital meter and backprobe the green/red wire on the TPS connector (not the test connector) and turn the screw til the meter reads one volt dc.

Anyway, when all is said and done, one should be able to pull the plug off the Switching solenoid and feel/hear it de-energize. The pull the Switching solenoid plug off and feel no such click because it should not be energized. That's not a requirement mentioned anywhere but on this post.

The TPS functions as shown the jpg attached (1986 Training Manual via NZCONVERTIBLE).

It determines 7 ZONES of operation and works in conjunction with several other sensors mentioned in the jpg.

That's all I know about TPS's and their function. Other than it's important to know that when the TPS is at 100% value, the linkage has only move about 17% of its full travel. I made the 17% figure up. I forget the true angle movement. It's in the book somewhere.
