Anti-theft!
Anti-theft!
OK, so I am Freshman from the University of North Carolina- Charlotte. In the spring semester I am going to be able to drive my car to school, but the deal is that I am nervous of the possibility of my car getting stolen (for those who don't know Charlotte has a big crime rate). I know a chick who got her car stolen in the school's parking lot, it really scares me and she's not the only one neither, I am always getting police reports emailed to be about people getting their vehicle stolen.
So now I'm looking for a good anti-theft system.
Does any one have any recommendations?

what if they tow the car?
go to a local stereo place and see about a alarm, and unplug the fuel pump under the steering column, turn the wheels all the way to one side.
There are GPS tracking devices becoming very cheap now as well, alot of boat insurance companies are requiring them before insuring them.
what more can you do?

There are so many little things you can do for free to make the car unmovable, and they have been covered in the past many times. Search "stolen" or "anti theft" and variations on that. There is at least one large topic in the last few months that I know I posted in with about 5 suggestions.
only bad thing about free anti-theft mehtods is they wont prevent a broken steering column, or a broken locks, windows, etc.. They may not actually get the car but they will cause damage.
at least a simple car alarm will keep away all but the pros.

"at least a simple car alarm will keep away all but the pros."
Exactly. That little flashing red light essentially sends a message saying it's going to be annoying to try and steal this car, so move on to the next one.
A separate fuel cut switch, so separate and old school deterante, makes it further annoying for those who ignored the flashing red light.
Anyone that is looking to steal a car wants to be able to do it quickly and with minimum attention being attracted their way.

I like it!
thanks
I have an alarm, pretty nice, cuts ignition and other stuff that I won't name on an open forum, but the GPS is the best thing, you can have it hard wired for power and have a back up battery for when they decide to pull the battery of course you will have to be sneaky with the wire so that a pro can't find it i think that the best place would be... won't give away my idea
a cool thing would be a computer like the guy in "The Transporter" has, an ignition lock code, that **** was awesome...

Have a fuel cut switch, but take the switch out.
When I am in a risky area, I take out the switch and either lock it in the glove box or put it in my pocket. I then tuck the wires under the center console, and no one knows any different.
That and a blinking red LED on the dash with some sort of security sticker on the side window and you should be set to go.

the newer gps devices can actually kill ignition and lock the doors as well, but that sounds like something that would only be a good thing to do if the car was not moving at the time.
Being that it is on school campus, get one of those skytek( yes like the terminator) alarms that pages you when it goes off. I have had no issue with mine and it is really loud. Like most of the other posters i have other old and dawicka2 schooled goodies on my fc as well.

Most car alarms are rendered useless by crappy installations. Personally if I was to steal a car, I wouldn't give a rats *** about setting of an alarm that no one will pay attention to. I'd then look under the dash, immediately notice the cheap made in China alarm harness, and then bypass it.
Immobilizers like this built into the car (ie. EGI fuse pull) won't stop someone from breaking in (nothing will) but will prevent the car from leaving under its own power. You can get very creative with methods to render the car unstartable. For example, just yank the fuel pump relay located right under the dash. Unplug the leading coil slightly, etc.
Or, use the sex noise car alarm:

gotta love megasquirts...
^^^^^^Nice link.
I too believe a quailty alarm installation is everything, thats why i did it myself. That enables you to get creative with the location of major alarm components.
