another hard start thread
got an 86 s4 n/a...150k orig miles.
poor mans compression test...seems fine, hadn't had a chance to use an actual compression tester yet.
had hard starts for a couple months now...(kinda broke right now) since i got the car.
been doin alot of tune up stuff...dont need to list everything
replaced spark plugs and wires...put them on and for a few days it started up real nice, but now its just like it was before...plus, everytime i take the spark plugs out, they are fouled.(and i got a crossthreaded spark plug too)
so im thinkin that if i focus on the ignition and keepin the spark plugs clean then i could have a great starting exp. everytime?
i know that there are a few other things i need to test and/or replace but until i get to that stuff...why would new plugs and wires create a really good start up for a short time only...?
i got stuck at the store the other day...i thought if i cleaned the foul from the plugs then it should work...nope
thanks guys...
i searched for a while and found people say, check your water thermo sensor, compression, grounds, ecu...well, easy enough if you gota garage...so until it stops raining im tryin to learn as much as i can here, thats why i thought i would describe exactly whats goin on, then i dont have to weed thru posts til i found someone that has the same trouble.

Leaky fuel injectors. Cause start issues (flooding) and fouling of plugs. The fact your plugs foul out and when new it starts up fine. When you had starting issues and you cleaned the plugs out I bet they were fouled. The car didn't start after cleaning them because the engine was flooded. A de-flood procedure should start your car right up and if you do this next time (de-flood) by pulling the EGI fuse and it does start, you will have confirmed your problem.

thanks for your help guys...
i got the injectors cleaned and tested at witchhunter...they did good work and the inj's came back just fine.(but im thinkin of testing the inj electrical clips...is that in the FSM, cant remember)
also, when i cleaned them i did the deflood process by removing the egi fuse, etc...(shoulda mentioned that part, sorry i try to be specific when i post here), still it's hit or miss, most of the time ill get stuck out there and it wont start, and somtimes it'll start after a few tries. and yes the plugs were fouled bad, quik too...had to literally scrap the black build up off with a small knife.
ok, lets say for instance that my plugs were already used and fouled(just scraped'em off) and i put new wires on and it started right up for 3 days with no question.? does that change much in the way of helping me diagnos...thanks so much btw!
and i read that thread about the hot start before...dont really want to do it as its just a temp fix, but i may just have to...as far as that goes i know i need to get a rtek or SA or somthin but i was kinda hopeing that i could find other things that could also be a cause for what im experiencing until i gather up the $ for an rtek or somthin.
thanks again guys.
