Another exhaust question

My cats are totally clogged. I am sure of it. The vacuum of my engine is weak as hell, I have to rev to 5000rpm on every shift just to keep up in traffic, and my GTU tops out at 90mph, at WOT, going downhill.

The idle is fine, so I don't think that my engine is pooched, and the compression test shows a little low, but well within spec, and I can see smoke and huge amounts of heat coming off of the cats. The heat in the trans tunnel gets so bad sometimes that it surprises my fingers when I go to touch the shifter.

Question is, what is the cheapest way to eliminate the cats? I'm not looking for a super exhaust here, I just want the damn cats out from under my car!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I never get more than 200 miles to a tank. Sometimes it is much less.

Well, looks like I found the answer to my question: http://www.rx7.com/cgi-local/2catalog.cgi?cat=4&part=2

Are the symptoms I have typical of cat failure?

Check out the pics & sound bite in my sig.
The whole rig came to <$300.

Crude but effective custom job by my local "barn in the woods" muffler shop.

Racing Beat header pre-silencer combo. Me and MAX-IMAL put it on his FC the other day. Makes for more speed and more sound Also gets rid of those nasty pussies.

The header would make for some better noises. I don't really like the look of the brick manifold anyhow. I just can't see it flowing and scavenging too well, and it will probably become a bottleneck once I go supercharged.
