Aluminum Hood?
Some models tended to have aluminum hoods, while it was more random on other models. After over 20 years and many owners, there is no telling what is currently on a given car. If you are looking for an aluminum hood at the junk yard, just bring along a magnet. If the magnet doesn't stick, then it is aluminum.

The S4 Sport model, the GTU's models had them per the factory spec. Rumors were that sometimes they would show up on other models unexpectedly. And of course, as the EA says, they get switched out. The other difficulty with these models is that over the years, other parts have been switched, repaints etc so these cars are not readily identifiable. Use a magnet to verify.
I have an 88 GXL that is getting an aluminum hood next week, just before paint.
Your best source is from a convertible. All verts had aluminum hoods from the factory. It was part of the weight saving program instituted to prevent the US EPA from labeling the Vert with the Gas Guzzler Tax.
Mazda had a pathological fear of the Gas Guzzler label being applied to the Rotary engine. The same issue prevented Mazda from supplying the Vert with a Turbo drivetrain in the US.
The FS and the regional FS section is your friend.

I have found more often than not that it was fairly random and is even more so now. Seems like half the cars i see or buy have changed hoods for one reason or another so i take nothing for granted now.
Bring the magnet....as stated already

I have a convertible with an aluminum hood. You can tell the difference just by lifting them. They're a lot lighter. Take the magnet to be sure. My hood has a couple of dings in it, but I'd be willing to part with it as an excuse to get a carbon fiber hood and to offset the cost. I'm not sure it would be worth the shipping though.
