The stock is urathane. They weigh about 10 LBs, if that. Can you imagine how terrible aluminium bumpers would be? They would dent if you looked at them funny....

perhaps he means the metal frame behind the foam and bumper skin...
In which case you woul dhave to have something custom built, that would cost a small fortune as even Mazda did not consider the weight savings vs cost to be even close to being reasonable.

The bumper covers are made of urethane, the bumpers are made of steel. A bumper is a structural component that is connected directly to the chassis. A bumper cover is a plastic cover, that covers the bumper to make the car aerodynamic, attractive, etc...

No, of course I'm not talking about the plastic (urethane) outer bumper..... Behind the plastics, behind the glass, there should be a steel tube that that runs along the bumper supports. They bolt to the frame in case of an accident they are what stops the object in front of you from pushing everything firewall forward into your lap.
Or atl east I thought... I'm by no means an rx-7 guy (thats why I'm asking you all) but all the other cars I've had have had a tubular steel bumper. And I was pretty sure not having a very sturdy steel/alum support in the front of the car is illegal due to accidents and insurance purposes.

well some guys who are hell bent on weight reduction will actualy take the steel bumper support out. sure itll save 40lbs, but the car will crush up like a soda can in a wreck.
im not possative but i dont think its illegal to remove the support. however it is certainly not prudent. but i geusss you are only indangering youreslf if you take it out.

Hmmm... got home after work and took a look. The damn thing is fiberglass. Shows what I know. (but thats why I'm here right?)The anchor points are steel but not worth the time or money to remove.
What do you guys do to remove weight from these cars? My interior is completly stripped pass seat gone, ac & all componets under hood and all controls under dash gone.
No spares or jacks of course... Anyone got a guess what this thing weighs... 86 GXL with sunroof.
Thanks
