alternators

Ok, i'm looking for a new high output alternator for an rx-7, but i haven't found any online shops that have them, or even have suggestions on what to find. I need a high output alternator because i have a system pushing ~1600W RMS at max(normaly i dont run it nearly that loud though). I'm looking in the 140-160A range for an alternator, at at least 70A at idle. Also something that can preferably handle the load of being put to 6-8k rpms once in awhile without burning up.I know running the alternator really fast is a good way to heat it up and burn it out.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Aren't there local places everywhere that rebuild alternators? I know there are here. Can't they just beef up your current alternator? Just an idea if they can.

There should be local shops that rebuild. You can't get much more from a stock rx7 alternator, prob up to 20 more amps. Like I've posted before, i'm currently have a 200 amp alternator that was from a Ford Contour. It was 120 amps stock rewound to 200. It was done at www.egrproducts.com. I'm currently doing ~3000 watts RMS. So i needed at least a 180 amp alternator.

How hard was the instalation of the alternator, since it was from a different car? I've never touched an alternator before so i have no clue, although in the rex it looks like there is a decent ammount of room there.

Did you need anything special like different mounting or longer pully?

Thanks

Mounting was a little bit time comsuming, prob a hour. They provided the right size pulley with the alternator and supplied a wire diagram on hooking it up. The only thing that needed to be changed was the right side (drivers side) mounting bracket. All you need was a straight bar instead of the curved one. They also supplied the washers for the left side, but i still needed to add 2 little ones( no biggie).

The Rx7 alternator has its mounting arms at the 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions, the contours alternator has the 7 o'clock, but the other one is at the 4 o'clock position. The 4 o'clock position lines up right above the hole where the stock curve bar attaches to on the engine. Thats y u need a straight bar.

I wish i had pics, it would be easier to explain.

Good Luck
